HOW TO SPEND 1 DAY IN CANCUN?

    How to get around Cancun?

First things first, how do you get around? If you’re arriving by cruise, you’ll likely dock at Puerto Juárez, just a short drive from the Hotel Zone. Taxis are easy to find, but make sure to agree on a price before getting in. I had pre-booked my transportation from this service.

You can also rent a car from the airport, I found driving around in Cancun is pretty much similar to driving in the US and parking is easy to find.

I now offer a custom vacation planning service. Check it out here!

How do you spend one day in Cancun?

Mornings in Cancun are the best. You can feel the cool breeze, quiet beaches, and fewer crowds. I’d recommend you to start with a refreshing swim before going out to see some local places.

    1. Playa Tortugas– The beach is beautiful and the turquoise waters of Playa Tortugas are one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. This beach is close to the port, has calm waves, and even has a pier for catching a ferry to Isla Mujeres. I always look for a local vendor selling some refreshing coconut water, there is no wrong time to hydrate, in my opinion!
    2. Playa Delfines– This is one of Cancun’s most beloved beaches. Known for its expansive shoreline and the iconic “Cancun” sign, perfect for taking the iconic pictures and, it’s a perfect spot for morning relaxation. The line did build up quickly to get s picture by the Cancun sign. So either get there early or just wait in line and be quick with your photography skills.
    3. Explore El Meco Ruins– Skip the long trips to Chichén Itzá and Tulum if you don’t have time for long trips, and check out El Meco Ruins instead! It is just 10 minutes from the cruise port. This hidden gem has real Mayan ruins and almost no crowds. You’ll probably see iguanas sunbathing all over the place!
    4. Visit El Rey Ruins– I loved visiting El Rey Ruins, it’s such an underrated spot! And it is just a short drive from Playa Delfines, this ancient Mayan site was way less crowded than the big ruins, but I still found it super interesting. Walking through the old temples and plazas, I pictured what life was like back then. I hope you aren’t afraid of the iguanas because they’re everywhere. They were chilled in the sun like they own the place! If you’re into history but don’t want to spend hours on a long trip, this is the perfect quick stop.
    5. Snorkeling at Punta Nizuc– If you’re into snorkeling, you have to check out Punta Nizuc! The water is super clear, and since it’s part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, there’s a ton of colorful fish and coral to see. The best part is that you might even spot some of the underwater sculptures from the Cancun Underwater Museum. It’s like swimming through an art gallery!
    6. Shopping at La Isla Shopping Village– La Isla Shopping Village is a great spot to shop and take in the vibe. It has a lot of stores, local artisan shops, and plenty of souvenirs to bring back home. I picked up some Mexican chocolate and a handcrafted bracelet, but you’ll find everything there. Definitely worth a stop!
    7. Sunset at Mirador Playa Delfines– Return to Playa Delfines for a breathtaking sunset. The panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea as the sun dips below the horizon are truly captivating. I found the evenings in Cancun are pure magic with the sunset over the ocean. It looked unreal and relaxing. I’d find a great spot to watch it, then I went for drinks and dinner to end the day right. Cancun has it all, and if you have time you can finish it with a fun night out.

    What to eat in Cancun?

    1. Lunch at El Fish Fritanga– The best fresh fish tacos by the water! El Fish Fritanga in the Hotel Zone serves amazing ceviche, grilled shrimp, and local seafood. It’s affordable, delicious, and super local. You’ll feel like a Mexican!
    2. Mextreme– They have amazing Mexican food, I’ll recommend getting the chilaquiles.
    3. Dinner at La Habichuela– Conclude your day with dinner at La Habichuela, a restaurant renowned for its Caribbean ambiance. I loved the seafood dishes and the authentic way they served the food in coconut shells!

What do I need to know before visiting Cancun?

It’s HOT! Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. You’ll be in the sun all day.
Drink lots of water! The heat is no joke, I keep a reusable bottle with me all time.
Carry some cash. Taxis and small shops may not take cards.
Tipping is normal. Restaurants expect 10-15% tips.
Beware of “free” tours! If someone offers you one, it’s probably a timeshare pitch.
