Best Things to do in Paris for First Time Visitors

This post is the best things to do in Paris for first time visitors.

Oh, Paris, the city of love.. Just saying the word makes me smile. When I finally arrived in the City of Light, it felt like stepping into a dream. You know that moment when you’ve seen something in movies, read about it in books, and then you’re actually there? That was me, standing by the Seine, pinching myself every few minutes.

Paris truly has this magical charm. It’s not just the iconic landmarks (which are every bit as stunning as you imagine) it’s the little things too. The cobblestone streets, the charming cafes, the way the Eiffel Tower sparkles at night. It felt like every corner had a story to tell, and I couldn’t wait to discover them all.

If you’re planning your first trip to Paris, let me share my personal favorites and all the things that made me fall head over heels for this city. Think of this as me spilling all my best Paris secrets over a coffee!

I now offer a custom vacation planning service. Check it out here!

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

First things first, Paris is a walking city. Seriously, bring your most comfortable shoes because you will walk a lot. But trust me, you’ll love it. Strolling through the different neighborhoods, or as the Parisians say, arrondissements, is the best way to soak in the Parisian vibe.

And, please don’t stress about speaking perfect French. A simple “Bonjour!” and “Merci!” go a long way. I found Parisians to be much warmer when you at least try. Plus, half the fun is picking up little phrases along the way!

If you’re visiting in spring or early autumn, you’re in for a treat. The weather is just right, and the city feels alive without being too crowded. Summer is beautiful but busy (and hot!), while winter gives you those cozy Christmas market vibes.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT PARIS?

Honestly? I don’t think there’s ever a bad time to visit Paris. This city has its charm in every season, and I mean every season. But if you’re asking me, from my own experience, I’ll tell you exactly when I fell in love with Paris the most.

I went in early spring, and it was such a dream. Think blooming cherry blossoms, mild weather, and fewer crowds. The air felt fresh and crisp, and the parks,  especially Jardin du Luxembourg, were absolutely gorgeous with pops of pink and green everywhere. Plus, it was warm enough to enjoy long walks along the Seine without needing to bundle up.

Summer, of course, is beautiful too. The city really comes alive with outdoor cafés buzzing from morning until late at night, picnics by the Eiffel Tower, and golden sunsets that seem to last forever. Just know that summer is also when Paris gets the most tourists, so it can feel a little hectic, and yes, it can get surprisingly hot!

Autumn in Paris? Pure romance. Picture leaves turning gold and amber, cozy afternoons in cafés, and fewer crowds. It’s perfect for strolling through neighborhoods like Le Marais or Montmartre, hot coffee in hand, as you soak up the autumn magic.

And winter? Don’t write it off! Paris is absolutely enchanting during the holiday season. The Christmas markets, festive lights, and the cozy charm of snuggling up with a vin chaud (hot wine) while watching the Eiffel Tower sparkle in the crisp winter air, it’s unforgettable.

So really, it depends on what kind of trip you’re dreaming of. If you love that lively, sun-soaked vibe, go in summer. For a more peaceful and romantic escape, spring or autumn will steal your heart. And if you want that cozy, festive Parisian winter magic, December is perfect.

    HOW TO GET AROUND PARIS?

Getting around Paris is a breeze. I used a mix of the metro, walking, and occasionally a scenic ride with the Big Bus Hop-On Hop-Off Tour. It’s such a fun way to see the main sights without exhausting yourself!

For a truly charming experience, I booked the Paris Illuminations in a Vintage 2CV. Cruising through the streets in this little classic car at night, with the city lights sparkling around me, felt like I was in an old French movie.

Of course, I also did a beautiful Seine River Night Cruise. Floating past the illuminated monuments, sipping on a glass of wine, it doesn’t get more Parisian than that!

MY PARIS ITINERARY: BEST THINGS TO DO FOR FIRST TIME VISITORS

Let’s talk about all the magical things I did (and you must do!) in Paris. I promise you, every single stop felt like a little dream come true.

    • Louvre Museum: You cannot visit Paris without seeing the Louvre! I remember standing in front of the glass pyramid feeling so giddy. The moment I laid eyes on the Mona Lisa, I got goosebumps. But honestly, it’s not just about her, the entire museum is breathtaking. Give yourself plenty of time to wander. I got wonderfully lost in the galleries, soaking in art and history at every turn.
    • Palace of Versailles: Walking through the Hall of Mirrors felt like stepping back in time. The grandeur, the chandeliers, the reflections everywhere, it’s pure royalty. I spent hours in the gardens too, just breathing in the fresh air and imagining I was part of the French court. Pro tip: go early to beat the crowds!
    • Notre-Dame Cathedral: Even from the outside, this place is spellbinding. Standing there, looking at the stunning façade and the intricate stone carvings, I felt such a connection to the history of Paris. Listening to the stories of the cathedral made me appreciate its resilience even more.
    • Arc de Triomphe: Climbing to the top was a bit of a workout (hello, stairs!), but once you get up there, the view will take your breath away. Watching the traffic swirl around the roundabout and seeing the Eiffel Tower in the distance, absolutely worth every step.
    • Moulin Rouge Show: Glitz, feathers, sequins, and champagne, what more could you want? The energy of the show is infectious. I couldn’t stop smiling the entire time. It’s the kind of night you’ll talk about forever.
    • Fragonard Perfume Workshop: This was such a unique experience! Learning about perfume creation and then blending my own fragrance felt so special. Now every time I wear it, I’m instantly transported back to Paris.
    • Wine Tasting Tour de France: Tasting French wines in Paris felt like a rite of passage. I loved learning about the different regions and sipping wines I’d never tried before. Plus, it was such a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
    • French Pastry and Baking Workshop: I had so much fun in this class! Rolling out dough, learning from a Parisian pastry chef, and finally tasting the buttery, flaky croissants we made,  honestly, one of my favorite moments.
    • Chocolate and Patisserie Walking Tour: Sweet tooth heaven! Wandering through the charming streets of Paris, tasting handcrafted chocolates and pastries from local shops, was a total dream.
    • Disneyland Paris: Magical is an understatement. Stepping into the park felt like stepping straight into my childhood. The rides, the parades, the atmosphere, it’s just as enchanting as you imagine.

If you have time, here are a few more local gems I loved:

    • Giverny (Monet’s Garden):
A short trip from Paris, and totally worth it! Strolling through Monet’s actual garden felt like stepping into a painting. It’s peaceful, colorful, and absolutely magical in spring or summer.
    • Canal Saint-Martin Picnic:
Such a cool, local spot away from the tourist crowds. I grabbed some pastries and wine, sat by the canal, and just enjoyed the Parisian vibe. So relaxing!

    WHERE TO EAT IN PARIS

Okay, let’s be honest, I probably spent half of my Paris trip just eating, and I have zero regrets. Paris is a foodie paradise, and every meal felt like a mini celebration. Even the simplest baguette from a corner bakery tasted like magic. Honestly, if you love food, Paris will completely spoil you!

One of my favorite mornings started in Le Marais, at this tiny café tucked between vintage shops. I ordered a café crème and the flakiest, butteriest croissant I’ve ever had. I just sat there for a while, watching the world wake up around me. Parisians really know how to enjoy a slow, perfect morning.

Later that day, I finally went to L’As du Fallafel, and wow, the hype is real. I grabbed my falafel sandwich to-go and ate it while wandering the cobblestone streets. Crispy, packed with flavor, and the sauces? Chef’s kiss.

For a true treat-yourself moment, I made my way to Angelina for their legendary hot chocolate. Honestly, it felt like drinking liquid chocolate heaven. Thick, rich, and served with a side of fluffy whipped cream, I couldn’t stop smiling.

Lunch at Carette, near Place des Vosges, was one of those picture-perfect Parisian moments. I sat outside with a glass of rosé and a fresh salad, feeling like I was in a movie scene. The terrace is dreamy, especially on a sunny day.

And you cannot leave Paris without a box of macarons from Ladurée. I got mine in the prettiest pastel box and snacked on them as I walked along the Seine. Raspberry and pistachio were my favorites!

For dinner, it was all about cozy bistros. I fell in love with Le Relais de l’Entrecôte, they serve one thing and they do it so well: steak-frites, drenched in the most delicious sauce. Simple, satisfying, and so French.

And to end the night, I treated myself to a drink at the legendary Bar Hemingway inside the Ritz Paris. Sitting there, surrounded by history and sipping on a perfectly crafted cocktail, felt like the most glamorous ending to a perfect Parisian day.
