    Best Day Trips from Amsterdam

This post is about the best day trips from Amsterdam, Netherlands. The Netherlands is small enough to explore easily, but surprises you.
    Best day trips from Amsterdam

This post is about the best day trips from Amsterdam, Netherlands. There’s a moment in every trip when a city starts to feel familiar. For me, that moment in Amsterdam happened on a slow morning when I was crossing yet another tiny bridge, coffee in hand, watching the reflections of crooked houses dancing on the canal. Amsterdam has this soft, quiet way of comforting you, almost like it’s whispering, Take your time, wander a little more.

But what I didn’t expect was how magical the places outside Amsterdam would feel. The best day trips from Amsterdam aren’t just “excursions”… they are tiny adventures that feel like stepping into different worlds. The Netherlands is small enough to explore easily, but big enough to surprise you again and again.

Let me tell you the places that left pieces of themselves with me, the towns that made me smile, breathe deeper, eat too much cheese, and sometimes cry because of how beautiful simple moments can be.

I now offer a custom vacation planning service. Check it out here!

Zaanse Schans: Where Time Slows Down and Windmills Tell Stories

The first day trip I took was to Zaanse Schans, and honestly… I didn’t expect it to feel like stepping into a postcard. The second I got off the bus, the smell of fresh waffles and wood hit me, and the windmills stood there quietly, turning slowly like they had all the time in the world.

I wandered by the riverside, watching the blades slice through the sky, and I felt peaceful, genuinely peaceful, in a way we don’t often allow ourselves to feel back home.

I booked the classic Zaanse Schans Windmills Tour, and it was affordable, safe, and effortless. The area itself is extremely safe, like a little Dutch village frozen in time.

I stopped at De Kraai Pancake House for a giant Dutch pancake (affordable), and sitting there by the windows with the countryside view… it felt like a slow Sunday morning even though it was a Tuesday.

Zaanse Schans reminded me that life doesn’t always need to be fast.

Volendam & Marken: The Sweetness of Dutch Fishing Villages

This trip was unexpected, because I booked it last minute after a rainy morning in Amsterdam. Somehow, the rain made me want to get out of the city, to see something softer, quieter. And Volendam ended up being one of my favorite places in the Netherlands.

Colorful houses, fishing boats rocking on calm water, the smell of fresh seafood…
Volendam felt like a warm hug.

The Volendam, Edam & Marken Tour was such a beautiful experience, affordable and incredibly scenic. Marken, with its wooden houses and peaceful little streets, felt like a storybook village.

I ate lunch at De Lunch in Volendam, simple, casual, affordable, and I swear the fish was so fresh it practically melted on my tongue.

Marken and Volendam felt like discovering the Dutch soul.

Keukenhof Gardens: A Flower Dream That Made Me Emotional

    Nothing prepared me for Keukenhof.
    Nothing.

When I walked into the gardens, it felt like the world exploded into color. Tulips in every shade you can imagine, pink, purple, yellow, orange, white, stretching like a rainbow across fields of green.

I remember standing still for a moment, overwhelmed. It was more than beautiful. It felt alive.

The Keukenhof Half-Day Tour is seasonal, but completely worth it. Prices are moderate, and the area is extremely safe.

I bought a stroopwafel, sat under a blooming pink tree, and just watched people smiling. Keukenhof didn’t feel like a garden, it felt like a place where happiness grows.

Giethoorn: The Car-Free Village That Feels Like Heaven

Giethoorn is one of those places you think cannot possibly be real until you’re standing right there. A village with no cars, only boats, little bridges, and cottages that look like they belong in a fairytale.

The moment I stepped into a boat for the Giethoorn Canal Tour, I felt like I had fallen inside a painting. Thatched roofs, flowers spilling out of gardens, little paths that lead nowhere but make you smile anyway…

This place felt spiritual. Peaceful. Quiet in a way cities can never be.

Prices in Giethoorn range from affordable to intermediate depending on where you eat. I stopped at Grand Café Fanfare, warm, cozy, comforting.

If you need to breathe, really breathe, go to Giethoorn.

The Hague: The City That Surprised Me With Its Elegance

The Hague (Den Haag) is so different from Amsterdam that it almost feels like a different country. Government buildings, embassies, wide avenues, and a coastal breeze that you can feel even before reaching the beach.

I took the The Hague, Delft & Rotterdam Tour and it was one of the best decisions of my trip.

The Hague felt sophisticated, safe, and polished, but still warm. I walked near the Binnenhof, had coffee at Hometown Coffee (affordable, super cozy), and felt like I finally understood the Netherlands beyond canals and bicycles.

There’s a calmness here that made me feel grounded.

    Delft: My Soft Blue Dream

    Oh, Delft.
This city felt like a whisper.

The home of the famous blue pottery, Delft felt intimate, gentle, beautifully preserved. The church bells echo softly, the canals are lined with willow trees, and the streets smell like bakeries.

I visited the Royal Delft Museum and even painted my own small tile (or at least attempted). The entire experience felt artistic, peaceful, and… emotional.

The tour I took, Delft & The Hague Day Trip, included Delft, and I’m so happy it did.

Lunch at Stads-Koffyhuis was warm and friendly, their sandwiches are huge and affordable.

Delft felt like a deep breath I didn’t know I needed.

Rotterdam: The Modern Netherlands You Never Expect

Rotterdam shocked me, in the best way.
Glass buildings, funky architecture, skyscrapers, wide streets… it felt like the futuristic sibling of Amsterdam.

I stood under the Cube Houses, laughing because they looked like something from a sci-fi movie, then wandered through Markthal eating samples of cheese until I was probably out of control.

The city is safe, clean, youthful, and full of creativity.
I took the Rotterdam, Delft & The Hague Tour and seeing all three in one day felt like tasting different flavors of the Netherlands.

Dinner at Bazar Rotterdam (affordable, colorful, multicultural) added a surprising twist to the day.

Rotterdam reminded me that countries evolve, grow, and reinvent themselves.

Utrecht: The City That Felt Like the Softer Sister of Amsterdam

Utrecht was an easy train ride from Amsterdam, and the moment I arrived, I knew I would love it.

Canals with cafés at water level.
Young energy mixed with medieval charm.
    Soft music drifting from bars.
    Safe, friendly, welcoming.

I didn’t book a tour here, I just wandered. Sometimes that’s the best thing to do.

I had brunch at The Village Coffee, hipster, delicious, affordable, and then climbed the Dom Tower, breathless and sweaty but rewarded with views that make you instantly forget everything else.

Utrecht felt like Amsterdam but calmer, cozier, and less crowded, like the version of the city where you can breathe a little easier.

CONCLUSION- BEST DAY TRIPS FROM AMSTERDAM

Amsterdam is beautiful, but what surrounds it?
That’s where the soul of the Netherlands hides.

Zaanse Schans taught me to slow down.
Volendam & Marken made me smile.
Keukenhof made me cry from the beauty.
    Giethoorn healed something in me.
    The Hague centered me.
    Delft inspired me.
    Rotterdam surprised me.
    Utrecht comforted me.

Every place felt completely different, yet all connected by this gentle Dutch charm, a mix of calm, beauty, warmth, and a lifestyle that tells you to enjoy life slowly.

If you ever have the chance to travel beyond Amsterdam, please do.
It will change your trip, and maybe even your heart.
