This post is about the best things to do in Los Angeles for first time visitors.
Embarking on my first adventure to Los Angeles, I was filled with a combo of excitement and curiosity. When I think of Los Angeles, I see images of palm trees, Hollywood stars, golden beaches, and larger-than-life experiences. As a first-time visitor, LA can feel overwhelming, it’s huge, diverse, and packed with things to do. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! Here’s your ultimate guide to experiencing the best of Los Angeles as a first time visitor.
But this isn’t just another travel guide; it’s your personal roadmap to an unforgettable first trip to LA. I’m sharing my own experiences, the must-see attractions, and insider tips to ensure your journey is as magical as you’ve always pictured. Whether you’re searching for “things to do in Los Angeles for the first time” or simply craving an authentic LA adventure, let’s dive into the heart of the City of Angels.

- Beverly Hills and Hollywood helicopter tour.
Soaring over Beverly Hills and Hollywood in a helicopter is pure magic! The moment we took off, the city unfolded beneath me, celebrity mansions, the iconic Hollywood Sign, Hollywood hills, Downtown LA, and the shimmering skyline of Los Angeles. Seeing it all from above? Unforgettable. If you want the best shots, book a sunset tour! Click here.
- Visit Disneyland Park
“The Happiest Place on Earth.” The moment I walked in, it felt like stepping into a storybook. Every detail, from the rides to the characters, was pure magic. Watching kids’ faces light up made it even more special! As a Florida resident who can visit Disney World Orlando every weekend, I wanted to visit the LA parks to compare and see how they different they were from the Orlando parks. While Disneyland LA is smaller in comparison to Disney Orlando, the rides are not the same. So I highly recommend you check out the LA parks too!
I also suggest downloading the Disney app as well as paying for the Genie+ to skip the extremely long lines!
- Universal Studios Hollywood
A visit to Universal Studios Hollywood is a must as one of the best things to do in Los Angeles for a first time visit. Universal is a famous theme park and film studio located in Los Angeles. The 2 sectioned park offers a mix of movie- themed attractions, thrilling rides, live shows, and behind-the-scenes studio experiences. As someone who has visited Universal Studios in Orlando, I wanted to check out the other park locations too and see how different they are. While Universal Hollywood is also smaller in comparison to the Orlando location, it is packed with unique and thrilling rides, shows, and so much more! It is a paradise for movie fans as you get to see the sets and how all the action takes place! I highly recommend this behind the scenes pass along with your ticket so you get to see all the ins and outs as well as skip the long lines!
- Griffith Observatory
The Griffith Observatory is the ultimate spot for panoramic views of Los Angeles and the Hollywood Sign, especially at sunset. Watching the city lights was pure magic! Inside, the space exhibits are fascinating, but the real highlight is the high-powered telescope for stargazing. Entry is free, though planetarium shows have a small fee.
Evenings get crowded, so I suggest you arrive early. I drove up in the evening, and let me tell you, parking is limited and fills up fast! If you’re driving, get there early to snag a spot; otherwise, be ready for a bit of a walk.
- The Getty Art Museum
The Getty Center is a must-visit, offering world-class art collections, stunning panoramic views of Los Angeles, and breathtaking architecture. The tram ride up felt like an escape, but the real highlight was the Central Garden, a living masterpiece.
- Watch a concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall
The Walt Disney Concert Hall is a stunner. Its curved steel design is even more incredible in person! Walking up, I couldn’t stop taking photos, and inside, the acoustics were pure magic. Even without a show, the self-guided audio tour explored.
- Hike the Hollywood Sign
Is one of those must-do LA experiences that just hits different. The trail was a workout, but totally worth it. Every turn showed off more of the city’s skyline, and getting that close-up view of the Hollywood Sign felt unreal! I took the Brush Canyon Trail, which was a solid balance of challenge and fun.
Tip: Start early in the morning to beat the heat and the crowds. And trust me, bring water, sunscreen, and good hiking shoes, your feet will thank you!
- Los Angeles County Museum of Art
Is a must-visit for art lovers and anyone looking for that perfect LA photo spot. Walking through the galleries, I was amazed by the mix of ancient artifacts and modern masterpieces. I parked on-site (paid), but public transit is a hassle-free option. Plan for 2-3 hours to explore!
- Hollywood Walk of Fame
Is a must-see for any movie lover! Walking down Hollywood Boulevard, spotting legendary stars felt like a true Hollywood experience. I loved taking photos there. It gets busy, so wear comfy shoes, and don’t miss the nearby TCL Chinese Theatre, another iconic stop!
Tip: Expect street performers and vendors everywhere.
- Santa Monica Pier
I think this is the perfect mix of beach vibes and classic LA fun. Riding the Ferris wheel at sunset was hands down the best way to take in the coastline views! Tips: Parking is available but pricey. If you want a quieter experience, head towards the northern part of the beach.
- Rodeo Drive
The heart of luxury shopping in LA, even if you’re just window-shopping, it’s a must-see! Walking past designer boutiques like Chanel and Gucci. I felt the vibe is like pure Hollywood glamour, and you might even spot a celebrity!
- Long Beach: Whale and Dolphin Watching cruise
It is an experience you can’t miss! The moment we set sail, I knew it was going to be special. Seeing whales and dolphins up close in their natural habitat was unforgettable. The guides were great at spotting them, and the views of the Pacific Ocean made it even better. Click here. Bring a jacket, it gets chilly out on the water!
- 2 Hour Hollywood Trail horseback riding tour
It is one of the most unique ways to see Los Angeles! Riding through the hills, with the Hollywood Sign in the background and panoramic city views. The horses were well-trained, making it perfect even for beginners. The 2-hour tour was the perfect length. Click here. Tip: Wear comfortable clothes and bring water, especially if you go during the day!
Los Angeles is an absolute must-visit, offering a mix of Hollywood magic, stunning beaches, iconic landmarks, outdoor adventures, and incredible food. There’s always something exciting to do. From luxury shopping on Rodeo Drive to scenic horseback rides with Hollywood views, LA truly has it all. I hope you enjoy your trip to Los Angeles, feel free to drop any questions or comments below!
