3 Day Itinerary for Tampa: What to do & Where to eat

This post is a 3 day itinerary for an amazing trip to Tampa, FL. Includes my favorite things to do and places to eat.
    3 Day Itinerary for Tampa

This post is a 3 day itinerary for an amazing trip to Tampa, FL.

There’s just something about Tampa that immediately wraps you in sunshine and good vibes. From the moment I arrived, I felt this coastal calm paired with bursts of excitement, like every corner had a story or surprise waiting. Tampa has the charm of a laid-back beach town but also offers a splash of adventure and culture that makes it perfect for my favorite shorts getaways from Orlando.

Whether it’s your first visit or you’ve always been curious about Florida’s Gulf Coast, this 3-day itinerary is packed with everything I did, loved, and would do again in a heartbeat. So grab your sunglasses and let’s dive in.

I now offer a custom vacation planning service. Check it out here!

THINGS TO KNOW – HOW DO I PLAN A 3-DAY TRIP TO TAMPA?

When is the best time to visit Tampa?

Spring and fall are my personal favorites. March to May and September to November offer warm temps without the humidity-heavy heat of summer. Plus, you’ll miss the bulk of the crowds. I visited in early April and it was perfect, sunny days, breezy evenings, and no wait at my favorite brunch spot.

    How to get around Tampa?

A rental car makes everything easier, especially if you plan to venture to Clearwater, St. Pete, or Crystal River. But for the main Tampa spots, rideshare apps like Uber work just fine. The TECO Line Streetcar is also a fun (and free!) way to hop around downtown and Ybor City.

    What to pack for Tampa?

Tampa is laid-back, so casual chic is your best bet. I packed:

    • Comfortable sandals for all-day exploring
    • A sunhat and sunscreen (you’ll need it!)
    • Lightweight dresses and a swimsuit
    • A light sweater for cooler evenings on the water

    Where to stay in Tampa?

Tampa’s neighborhoods each have a vibe, and where you stay really shapes your experience. I went with Hotel Haya in Ybor City, and I’m still dreaming about it. It’s artsy, colorful, and full of personality, just like the neighborhood. I could walk to vintage shops, grab café con leche from La Segunda, and end the night with sangria down the block. Perfection.

If beach mornings are more your speed, Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach is calling your name. Think ocean views, cocktails by the pool, and watching that Florida sunset melt into the Gulf. It’s about 40 minutes from downtown Tampa, but totally worth it if you want that toes-in-the-sand vibe.

Traveling with family? Hyatt Place Tampa Busch Gardens is a solid pick, close to the park, super comfy, and great value with breakfast included. Bonus: it’s also near ZooTampa and the science museum.

Wherever you land, Tampa will surprise you, in the best way.

    What to do in Tampa?

Tampa packs a lot into a small footprint, and it’s the kind of city that lets you choose your own adventure. Think city strolls, waterfront fun, and wild nature all in one trip. Here’s how to make the most of it:

    • Start in the city: Walk through historic Ybor City, dive into Tampa’s Cuban roots, and maybe join a historic walking tour if you’re a history nerd like me. It’s also the perfect place to grab a Cuban sandwich and people-watch.
    • Get out on the water: Tampa Bay is best experienced from the water. Whether it’s a pirate cruise, a sunset sail in St. Pete, or kayaking with manatees in Crystal River, if you’re not on a boat at least once, you’re doing it wrong.
    • Plan a beach day: Clearwater and Madeira Beach are both under an hour away, and trust me, you will want to dig your toes into that sugar-white sand.
    • Go wild (literally): ZooTampa and the Serengeti Safari at Busch Gardens are worth your time, especially if you’re with kids or just love animals like me.
    • Sprinkle in something unexpected: Take a sushi-making class, book an ATV ride, or do a nighttime clear kayak tour, it’s Florida, after all. You’ll find magic in the weird and wonderful.

I’ll break down exactly how I spent three amazing days in Tampa next, but just know, whatever your travel style, Tampa has something up its sleeve for you.

    Where to eat in Tampa?

Tampa’s food scene totally surprised me, in the best way. It’s a flavorful mix of Cuban, coastal, and creative, and honestly, every meal felt like part of the adventure.

    Columbia Restaurant

This historic gem in Ybor City is a must. I sat under mosaic tiles with a pitcher of sangria and devoured their legendary Cuban sandwich and the 1905 Salad. It’s more than a meal—it’s a full-on experience.

    Oxford Exchange

If you’re into stylish brunch spots, this one is dreamy. I went for avocado toast and a London Fog latte, and wandered their bookstore while I waited. It’s aesthetic heaven and the food’s amazing too.

    Ulele

Dinner by the river at golden hour? Yes, please. I had the chargrilled oysters, alligator hush puppies, and the guava pie for dessert. Everything was fresh, bold, and beautifully plated.

    Armature Works

A food hall with rooftop views, coffee, tacos, sushi, you name it. I grabbed lunch here one day and came back for cocktails at M. Bird at sunset. The vibe? Immaculate.

    La Segunda Central Bakery

For a quick bite, I loved this old-school bakery. Their guava pastries and Cuban bread are legendary. It’s perfect for breakfast on the go.

Tampa definitely fed my soul, and my camera roll. Every bite told a story, and I was more than happy to listen.

Any other tips for visiting Tampa?

    • Book tours in advance, especially the manatee kayaking, which sells out fast.
    • Sunscreen is non-negotiable. Even in winter.
    • Leave room in your bag, Tampa has some amazing local boutiques and handmade souvenirs.

STEAL MY 3 DAY ITINERARY FOR TAMPA

DAY 1: Old Streets & Open Waters

My first morning in Tampa started with Cuban coffee and the scent of cigars in Ybor City. This historic neighborhood is full of energy, with colorful buildings and stories echoing from the past. I joined the Tampa Historic Walking Tour, and wow, walking those brick-lined streets while hearing about the immigrant cigar rollers who helped build the city was unexpectedly moving.

Next stop? The Florida Aquarium. It was just a short ride away, and inside, I felt like a kid again. Touch tanks, sea turtles, stingrays, it’s such a peaceful and engaging experience, especially if you need to escape the afternoon heat.

To end the day on a high note (literally), I headed to Clearwater Beach for the Chute Em Up Parasailing Adventure. Floating above the water, toes dangling, the view was surreal, blue everywhere. Sunset painted the sky as I drove back to Tampa, tired and happy.

DAY 2: Cruises, Creatures & Sunset Views

Started day two with a big breakfast at La Segunda Bakery. Their Cuban bread and guava pastries are legendary for a reason.

Then I was off to something totally different, the Tampa Pirate Adventure Cruise with Open Bar. Yes, it’s kitschy, and yes, it was so much fun. We danced on deck, drank rum punch, and waved at passing boats. Perfect if you want a dose of silliness and great views.

The highlight of the day? Driving up to Crystal River for the Guided Kayak Tour with Manatee Encounters. It’s about 90 minutes from Tampa but 100% worth it. Floating next to a manatee, watching it move slowly through the water, is something I’ll never forget. Peaceful, magical, humbling.

Back in Tampa, I grabbed tacos at Bartaco Hyde Park. Their plantain appetizer and spicy margaritas were the perfect ending.

DAY 3: Sky, Safari & Sushi

My last day started early with a visit to Busch Gardens for the Tampa Bay Serengeti Safari Tour. I wasn’t sure what to expect but ended up feeding giraffes (!!) and learning so much about wildlife conservation. It’s fun and meaningful, especially if you’re traveling with kids.

In the afternoon, I wanted to cool off so I did the Clear Glowing Kayak Nighttime Tour. Paddling through calm waters in a clear kayak lit up underneath? So peaceful and unique, it felt like floating through a galaxy.

For my farewell dinner, I signed up for the Interactive Sushi Making Class With a Local Chef. We rolled sushi, laughed, and shared our travel stories. It was such a warm, friendly way to end the trip. Way more memorable than any fancy restaurant.

CONCLUSION- 3 DAY ITINERARY FOR TAMPA

Three days in Tampa was just enough to fall in love with the rhythm of this sunny, salty city. It surprised me in the best ways, from pirate cruises to parasailing, manatees to historic stories. Tampa is fun, flavorful, and full of heart.

If you’ve been thinking of a Florida getaway that’s a little different from the usual theme park chaos, trust me, Tampa is the one.

Pack that sunscreen, come hungry, and leave space for adventure. Because Tampa brings it. And it might just steal your heart too.

Ready to go? Let me know what you’re planning, and feel free to steal this itinerary. I’d do it all over again tomorrow. Let me know if you need help planning out your Florida getaways!
