This post is a weekend itinerary for New York city including tips on how to plan your trip, where to eat and things to do.
It’s funny, no matter how many cities I visit around the world, New York City always pulls me back. There’s just something about it. The first time I went, I was that wide-eyed tourist craning my neck to see the tops of skyscrapers. And even now, after a few trips, the magic hasn’t worn off one bit.
So when a friend asked if I wanted to do a spontaneous weekend getaway to NYC, my answer was an easy YES.
We booked our flights, packed light, and before I knew it, I was stepping out of Penn Station on a crisp Friday afternoon, suitcase wheels bumping over the sidewalk, heart racing with excitement. I could already hear a saxophone playing in the distance and smell roasted nuts from a street cart. New York was calling.
If you’re thinking about planning a weekend in NYC, trust me, you can pack SO much fun, flavor, and adventure into just two days here. And I’m about to tell you exactly how we did it.
Here’s my story, and my tips, so you can create your own unforgettable NYC weekend too. Ready? Let’s go.
THINGS TO KNOW- HOW DO I PLAN A WEEKEND TRIP TO NYC?
When is the best time to visit NYC?
I’ve visited NYC in all seasons, and each has its own charm. But here’s my personal take:
Spring and Fall are magical. Think blooming cherry blossoms in Central Park, or golden leaves crunching under your boots in the Village. The weather is perfect for walking, and trust me, you’ll walk A LOT.
Winter is pure holiday movie magic, skating rinks, twinkling lights, the Rockefeller tree. Just pack warm!
Summer brings rooftop bars and late-night vibes, but be ready for heat and crowds.

How to get around NYC?
We arrived by train, but once you’re in the city, it’s all about mixing subway and walking.
I love starting my mornings on foot, you stumble upon so many cool corners that way. But when your legs need a break, the subway is your best friend.
Download the Citymapper app, it made our weekend so much easier to navigate.

What to pack for a weekend trip to NYC?
Here’s what I packed for our weekend:
- Comfy sneakers, lifesaver
- Crossbody bag, safe & hands-free
- Phone charger, you’ll drain your battery fast snapping photos
- Layers, NYC weather can be sneaky!
- A little black outfit, because NYC nightlife is a vibe
Where to stay in NYC?
This trip, we booked a cute hotel in Greenwich Village, hands down one of my favorite neighborhoods. It’s full of charming streets, leafy squares, and cozy cafes, and you’re still close enough to walk to big sights.
But here are a few good options:
- Midtown if you want to be near Times Square & theaters
- SoHo if you love chic boutiques & a trendy vibe
- Upper West Side for a quieter, local feel near Central Park
What to do on a weekend in NYC?
We landed on a plan that balanced iconic must-sees with those little NYC moments I love so much. Here’s what we did, and what I’d tell any friend visiting for a weekend:
- Morning walk in Central Park
- A museum hit, this time we chose The Met
- Quick wander through Times Square, just once, for the vibe
- High Line stroll, one of my favorite city experiences
- View from Top of the Rock, still gives me goosebumps
- Get lost in SoHo and West Village, shop, sip, people-watch
- Evening at a Broadway show, we saw & Juliet this trip, SO good!
Where to eat in NYC?
You know me, no trip is complete without good food. We ate SO well this weekend:
Friday Night
- Landed late, grabbed slices from Joe’s Pizza on Carmine Street. Standing on the sidewalk, folding a perfect NY slice… I was in heaven.
Saturday Brunch
- Jack’s Wife Freda → adorable spot in SoHo with the best shakshuka
Coffee Breaks
- Blue Bottle Coffee, love their vibe and the quality is always spot-on
- Random little espresso bars in the Village, the best discoveries
Saturday Dinner
- We scored a table at Carbone (miracle!), and YES, it lives up to the hype. The spicy rigatoni vodka… unreal.
Sweet treat:
- Walked down to Levain Bakery for late-night cookies. Sat on a stoop with warm cookies in hand, watching NYC buzz around us. One of those perfect New York moments.

Any other tips for a weekend itinerary in New York city?
- Don’t overschedule! Leave time to wander.
- Book Broadway tickets in advance or use TodayTix app for deals.
- Wear those comfy shoes, you’ll hit 20k+ steps easy.
- Let yourself have moments to just sit and soak it in. Some of my favorite memories this trip weren’t the big sights, they were sipping wine at a tiny West Village bar, or people-watching in Washington Square Park.
STEAL MY WEEKEND ITINERARY FOR NEW YORK CITY
DAY 1: Park Strolls, Museum Magic + Skyline Views
Morning:
Start your day with an early walk in Central Park, I love entering at 72nd Street and strolling through The Ramble. It’s this beautiful, almost secret-feeling part of the park with winding paths and little wooden bridges. I wandered for almost an hour, coffee in hand, just soaking it all in, the quiet corners, the early joggers, the sun filtering through the trees.
Late Morning:
Head to The Met, one of my all-time favorite museums. We spent about 1.5 hours there and trust me, you could easily stay all day, but don’t try to do it all. I like to pick a couple of exhibits (the rooftop garden is a must when it’s open!) and leave time for more city adventures.
Lunch:
Time for brunch! We headed to Jack’s Wife Freda, such a cozy little spot. I had their shakshuka and it was perfection. This is also a great time to wander the SoHo streets, think pretty cobblestone blocks, cute boutiques, and tons of spots to snap photos. I could’ve spent hours just window shopping and soaking up the vibe.
Afternoon:
Walk the High Line, we entered at Hudson Yards. It’s such a cool way to see the city from a different angle. I stopped for coffee partway through and just sat on a bench watching the world go by, pure NYC magic.
Evening:
Catch sunset at Top of the Rock, seriously, the views as the city lights start twinkling below you? Absolute goosebumps moment. Afterward, we had dinner at Carbone (total bucket list spot, their spicy rigatoni vodka is worth every bite). We ended the night with post-dinner drinks in Greenwich Village, one of my favorite areas to wander after dark, the jazz clubs, the glow of old neon signs, the cozy corners… perfect way to end day one.
DAY 2: Village Charm, Iconic Views + Broadway Fun
Morning:
Started day two with brunch in West Village, we went to Banter and it was SO good. The vibe here is laid-back and neighborhood-y. After brunch, we took a slow stroll through Washington Square Park, such a great people-watching spot. I grabbed a second coffee and we just sat on a bench for a while, soaking up the scene.
Midday:
More wandering in West Village, you’ll find charming shops, tiny bookstores, cute cafes. We made our way uptown to Top of the Rock (yes, I love it so much I’ll recommend it again if you missed sunset!) or you can explore Fifth Avenue and do a little window shopping.
Lunch:
Quick and classic: Joe’s Pizza. You just have to, there’s something about standing on the sidewalk with a perfectly folded New York slice in hand.
Afternoon:
If you have time, pop into MoMA, it’s smaller than The Met but packed with incredible art. We spent about an hour here and it was the perfect culture hit. Afterward, a quick walk through Times Square, I know it’s touristy, but it’s still fun to see the lights and buzz at least once.
Evening:
We wrapped up the weekend with an early dinner at Katz’s Delicatessen (the pastrami is a must!) before heading to Broadway for a show. This time we saw & Juliet and it was such a fun way to cap off the trip. I always say no visit to NYC is complete without that Broadway magic.
