This post is about the best day trips to take from Los Angeles, California. Los Angeles has a way of pulling you in and wearing you out at the same time. I love it, the palm trees, the golden light, the feeling that anything could happen, but after a few days, I always get this itch. That quiet little voice that says, “What if we just drive?”
And that’s the magic of LA. You don’t need to book a flight or take time off work to feel like you’ve escaped. You just need a car, a good playlist, and the willingness to leave the city behind for a few hours. Mountains, beaches, wine country, deserts, they’re all sitting right there, waiting for you.
These are the day trips from Los Angeles that made me breathe deeper, slow down, and fall a little more in love with California every single time.
I now offer a custom vacation planning service. Check it out here!
Malibu: When the Ocean Fixes Everything
Malibu is always my first escape when LA starts to feel heavy. The drive alone feels like therapy. Windows down, salty air coming in, the Pacific stretching endlessly to your right. Every time I arrive, it feels familiar and calming, like visiting a friend who never asks questions.
I usually spend my time walking the beach or just sitting quietly, watching surfers wait patiently for waves. Malibu feels safe, laid-back, and expensive without trying too hard. Food here definitely leans toward the pricier side, but the views make up for it.
One of my favorite stops is Malibu Farm Restaurant. It’s not cheap, but sitting right on the pier with fresh food and ocean views feels like a reward.
If you want something more active, I loved doing coastal experiences like guided beach walks and outdoor tours, which you can find here: Malibu & Santa Monica Coastal Experiences. Malibu reminds me that sometimes doing nothing is exactly what you need.
Santa Barbara: A Soft, European-Feeling Reset
Santa Barbara feels like LA’s calmer, more elegant cousin. The first time I arrived, I remember thinking it didn’t even feel like California anymore. White buildings, red-tile roofs, palm-lined streets, it felt almost Mediterranean.
Downtown is clean, safe, and very walkable. I spent hours just strolling State Street, popping into boutiques and cafés, feeling like time wasn’t chasing me anymore. The beach here feels different too, quieter, gentler, more refined.
Lunch at The Lark Santa Barbara was one of those meals I still think about. Prices are moderate-to-expensive, but the food is incredible and the atmosphere feels special without being stuffy.
Santa Barbara is perfect if you want a relaxed day with good food, wine, and ocean air. It’s one of those places that feels easy to love. You can also explore Santa Barbara without worrying about logistics through a guided trip: Santa Barbara trolley tour.
Laguna Beach: Art, Cliffs, and Quiet Beauty
Laguna Beach surprised me in the best way. It feels intimate and artsy, almost like a secret coastal town hiding between cliffs. The beaches are smaller, tucked into coves, and feel incredibly peaceful compared to the big LA beaches.
Walking through Laguna, I felt calm almost instantly. The town is very safe, full of galleries, and perfect for slow wandering. I spent most of my day beach-hopping and sitting quietly with my thoughts.
I grabbed food at The Cliff Restaurant Laguna Beach. Moderate prices, stunning ocean views, and the kind of place where you don’t rush your meal.
Laguna is ideal if you want something romantic, creative, and calm, the kind of day trip that feels like a deep breath.
Big Bear Lake: A Mountain Escape Without the Commitment
Big Bear feels like stepping into a completely different state. The drive winds through mountains, and suddenly you’re surrounded by pine trees instead of palm trees. Every time I go, I forget how close it actually is to LA.
In winter, Big Bear feels cozy and snowy. In summer, it’s green, fresh, and perfect for hiking or just sitting by the lake. It’s safe, friendly, and very outdoorsy.
I love grabbing comfort food after a long walk at Grizzly Manor Café. Affordable, casual, and exactly what you want after being outside all day.
If you don’t want to deal with driving mountain roads, guided day trips are a great option:
Big Bear Mountain & Lake Day Trip
Big Bear always reminds me how much I need nature, and how close it actually is.
Palm Springs: Desert Calm and Mid-Century Dreams
Palm Springs feels like sunshine bottled up into a town. The desert heat, the palm trees, the retro architecture, everything feels intentional and stylish. I love how quiet it feels during the day, especially compared to LA.
Downtown Palm Springs is clean, safe, and easy to explore. I usually spend my time café-hopping, sitting by a pool, or just driving around admiring the houses.
One of my favorite meals here was at Farm Palm Springs. It’s charming, slightly pricey, and feels like a European escape in the middle of the desert.
The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is one of the coolest experiences, going from desert heat to mountain cool in minutes: Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Ticket. Palm Springs is perfect when you want calm, sunshine, and a little bit of glam.
Ojai: When You Need Silence More Than a View
Ojai feels spiritual without trying to be. It’s small, quiet, and surrounded by hills that glow pink at sunset. Every time I go, I slow down without meaning to.
Ojai is very safe, very calm, and perfect if you want a digital detox kind of day. I spent most of my time walking, sitting with coffee, and doing absolutely nothing, and it felt amazing.
Lunch at The Farmer and The Cook was fresh, affordable-to-moderate, and full of flavor.
Ojai isn’t about attractions, it’s about how it makes you feel. And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
Temecula: Wine Country Without Napa Prices
Temecula was one of the biggest surprises for me. Rolling vineyards, warm sun, and a relaxed atmosphere that feels worlds away from LA. It’s perfect for a slower, more indulgent day.
Wine tasting here is much more affordable than Napa, and the vibe is friendly and unpretentious. I felt completely safe wandering around, and the scenery is beautiful.
One of my favorite wineries was Wilson Creek Winery. Moderate pricing, great wine, and a gorgeous setting.
If you don’t want to drive after tasting, tours are a great idea: Temecula Valley Wine Tour. Temecula feels like a mini vacation disguised as a day trip.
Ventura: Quiet Coastal Energy
Ventura feels like Malibu’s quieter, more down-to-earth sibling. The pier, the beach, the relaxed downtown, everything feels easy here. It’s very safe, very local, and perfect if you want a low-key coastal escape.
I grabbed seafood at Lure Fish House Ventura. Moderate prices, fresh food, and a comfortable vibe.
Ventura is the kind of place you go when you don’t want to impress anyone, just enjoy the day.
BEST DAY TRIPS FROM LOS ANGELES
Living in or visiting Los Angeles means you’re never stuck. When the city feels loud, crowded, or overwhelming, the road is always there. In under two hours, you can be somewhere completely different, ocean, mountains, desert, vineyards.
These day trips reminded me that balance matters. That leaving the city is sometimes the best way to fall back in love with it.
And if you’re ever in LA and feel that itch, trust it. The road always knows where to take you. I hope you enjoyed my post on best day trips from Los Angeles.
