    Best Day Trips from Orlando

This post is about the best day trips to take from Orlando.

Okay, let’s be honest, Orlando is absolutely amazing (hello, theme park capital of the world!). But if you’re like me and love mixing a little adventure outside the city, you’re in for such a treat. I had the best time using Orlando as my home base and exploring the cute towns, beaches, and hidden gems just a short drive away. Some were so charming that I found myself thinking, I love to live here. So I will give you my full guide and tips to the best trips from Orlando.

Florida is full of surprises, and what I loved most is how different each spot felt. One day I was strolling through a historic town, the next I was relaxing on a sugar-sand beach or kayaking with manatees. If you’re planning your trip and want to explore beyond the parks, trust me, these day trips from Orlando are the perfect way to see a whole other side of the Sunshine State!

I now offer a custom vacation planning service. Check it out here!

    Mount Dora

Mount Dora completely stole my heart. It’s only about 40 minutes from Orlando, but it feels like you’ve been whisked away to a small town straight out of a storybook. The moment I arrived, I was charmed by the quaint streets, vintage shops, and that relaxed, artsy vibe. It’s the kind of place where you want to slow down and just wander.

I spent the morning browsing antique shops and cute little boutiques. Mount Dora is known for its antique festivals, by the way! Later, I grabbed lunch at The Goblin Market, a cozy spot with the dreamiest courtyard seating and amazing sandwiches.

After lunch, I walked down to the lakeside for a peaceful moment by Lake Dora. If you have time, hop on one of the boat tours for gorgeous views of the lake and its famous lighthouse. It’s so charming, I didn’t want to leave!

    Tampa

Tampa surprised me in the best way. It’s about an hour and a half drive from Orlando, and it’s such a fun city by the bay! There’s this cool mix of history, culture, and coastal energy that made me want to stay longer than just a day.

I started my visit at the Tampa Riverwalk, which is perfect for a leisurely stroll with pretty waterfront views. Then, I explored Ybor City, the historic district known for its Cuban roots and hand-rolled cigars. The colorful buildings and lively vibe here are amazing.

For lunch, I had to go to Columbia Restaurant (Florida’s oldest restaurant!). Their Cuban sandwich and sangria are iconic. Afterward, I squeezed in a quick visit to the Florida Aquarium, perfect if you love marine life as much as I do. If you have time, head over to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay for roller coasters and animal encounters!

    Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach is such a classic Florida destination, and it’s just about an hour’s drive from Orlando. Honestly, I loved the retro, beach-town vibe here. The wide, sandy beaches are perfect for a barefoot stroll, and yes, you can actually drive your car right onto the sand! (It felt wild but so fun!)

My first stop was the famous Daytona International Speedway. Even if you’re not a racing fan, the energy is contagious, and the tours are super cool. Then I headed straight to the beach for a few hours of sun and sea.

For lunch, I stopped by Crabby Joe’s Deck & Grill, it’s right on the pier, and the views are unbeatable. I highly recommend their fish tacos! Before heading back to Orlando, I wandered along the boardwalk and enjoyed the old-school arcade games and ice cream stands. Pure nostalgia!

    Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach is just over an hour from Orlando, and let me tell you, it’s a total surfer’s paradise! The vibe here is super chill, and I instantly felt like I was on vacation the moment I arrived.

I spent the morning at the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier, which is lined with bars, restaurants, and shops. The views of the Atlantic are beautiful, and if you’re into surfing, this is the place to catch some waves.

For lunch, I couldn’t resist Coconuts on the Beach. It’s lively, right by the water, and the coconut shrimp is amazing. If you have time, stop by the Ron Jon Surf Shop, it’s an iconic spot and fun to browse even if you’re not surfing. And space lovers, you’re in luck, Cocoa Beach is super close to the Kennedy Space Center!

    St. Augustine

Oh, St. Augustine, this city feels like stepping back in time! It’s about two hours from Orlando, but so worth the trip. Known as the oldest city in the U.S., it’s full of cobblestone streets, Spanish architecture, and fascinating history.

I spent hours wandering through the historic district, popping into little boutiques and museums. Don’t miss Castillo de San Marcos, a 17th-century stone fortress with amazing views of the waterfront. And the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park is such a fun (and slightly quirky) stop!

For lunch, I recommend The Floridian, which focuses on farm-to-table Southern comfort food. Their shrimp and grits were perfect. After eating, I grabbed an ice cream and just kept strolling, the charm of St. Augustine is honestly everywhere.

    Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach is about a two-hour drive from Orlando, and it’s one of my favorite beach escapes. The sand here is like powdered sugar, so soft and white! And the water is crystal clear, just like the name promises.

I loved spending the day lounging on the beach, swimming, and soaking up the sunshine. In the evening, Pier 60 is the place to be. There’s a nightly sunset festival with local vendors, street performers, and live music, it’s such a fun atmosphere! You can also head out for sunset and harbor lights cruise, click here.

For food, Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill is iconic. Their grouper sandwich is a must-try, and the laid-back beachfront vibe is perfect after a day in the sun. Clearwater Beach really feels like a little slice of paradise!

    Crystal River

If you’ve ever dreamed of swimming with manatees, you need to visit Crystal River! It’s about an hour and a half drive from Orlando, and it’s one of the only places in Florida where you can legally snorkel alongside these gentle giants. Click here manatee viewing cruise.

I booked an early morning tour, and it was truly magical. Floating quietly in the water, watching the manatees glide by, it’s an experience I’ll never forget. The water in the springs is crystal clear and stays around 72°F year-round.

After my swim, I stopped for lunch at The Crab Plant, a casual seafood spot right by the water. The shrimp basket was delicious, and the views were the perfect way to end my adventure before heading back to Orlando.

    Bok Tower Gardens

Bok Tower Gardens is about an hour and a half from Orlando, and it’s like discovering a secret garden in the middle of Florida. The lush landscapes, blooming flowers, and tranquil paths make it the perfect spot for a peaceful day trip.

I loved just wandering through the gardens, taking in the scent of the orange blossoms and snapping photos of the towering carillon. When the bells started to chime, it felt almost magical, like something out of a fairy tale.

For a light lunch, I stopped by the Blue Palmetto Café right inside the gardens. Their sandwiches and salads are fresh and tasty, and the outdoor seating lets you stay surrounded by nature while you dine.

    Tarpon Springs

Tarpon Springs is such a hidden gem! Just under two hours from Orlando, this little town has a rich Greek heritage that I absolutely adored. The moment I arrived, I felt like I’d been transported to a seaside village in Greece.

The famous Sponge Docks are a must-visit. You can watch sponge divers in action, shop for natural sponges, and sample incredible Greek pastries. I took a boat tour around the bay and learned so much about the town’s history. I also found this guided Sponge Dock stroll tour for those looking to learn a little bit more from a tour guide. Click here.

For lunch, I stopped at Hellas Restaurant & Bakery, their spanakopita and baklava were out of this world. Tarpon Springs feels like such a unique escape, and it’s the perfect way to add a Mediterranean twist to your Florida trip.
