Best European Countries to Visit for First time Solo travelers

This post is about the best European countries to visit for first time solo travelers.

There’s something magical about packing your bag, hopping on a plane, and heading off on your own. No fixed plans, no one to compromise with, just you, your backpack, and the world. I’ve always loved traveling solo, and over time, I’ve realized that Europe is one of the best places for solo travelers. From historic cities to scenic train rides, each country has its own charm and unique vibe.

So if you’ve been dreaming about your first solo adventure or just looking for your next one, here’s my personal story and experience in what I honestly consider the best European countries for solo travel.

I now offer a custom vacation planning service. Check it out here!

    Italy

Welcome to Italy, where every street feels like a movie scene. Italy was one of the first countries I visited solo, and let me tell you, solo travel in Italy is a dream. The moment I landed in Rome, I felt like I’d stepped into a postcard. The history, the energy, the chaos… I loved every second. Read about the best things to do in Rome here.

I remember walking through Piazza Navona with a gelato in hand, watching street performers while the late afternoon sun lit up the fountains. I didn’t even feel alone, there’s something about Italy that makes you feel instantly welcome.

I spent my days getting lost in the cobblestone streets of Florence, sipping espresso in tiny cafés, and just taking it all in. The best part was that Italians are warm and friendly, and I had so many small but memorable conversations, one with a shop owner who insisted I try his homemade limoncello, another with a fellow traveler I met at a rooftop bar in Venice. Italy was also where I learned how freeing it is to do things at your own pace, solo travel really lets you savor every moment. While you plan your trip to Italy, checkout my recommended packing lists for Rome here.

    Germany

Organized, safe, and surprisingly fun. Next up was Germany, and it honestly surprised me in the best way. Solo travel in Germany feels super easy, everything is so organized, and you’ll never feel lost even if you don’t speak German.

I started in Berlin, and I’ll be honest, it was a bit of a culture shock after sunny Italy. But Berlin grows on you fast. It’s edgy, creative, and full of history. I remember spending hours at the East Side Gallery, just walking and reading the messages painted along the remains of the Berlin Wall. This guided walking tour is also a great way to learn about the history.

One of my favorite memories was sitting at a street-side café in Prenzlauer Berg, journaling and sipping cappuccino as locals walked their dogs or rode by on bicycles. The city is huge, but it’s also full of hidden spots that are perfect for solo travelers to just slow down and enjoy.

And then there’s Munich, clean, beautiful, and so full of charm. I felt completely safe walking around at night, even alone. Germany is perfect if you want to mix big cities with nature, since it’s so easy to hop on a train and explore nearby towns or lakes.

    England

Comforting, classic, and so easy to navigate. Traveling solo in England felt like a soft landing, especially after the busyness of Germany and Italy. Maybe it’s because I speak the language, or maybe it’s just something about the vibe, but I felt instantly at ease.

London was my first stop, and wow, it’s a city that makes you feel like you’re in the center of the world. I spent mornings walking through Hyde Park, afternoons at museums (most of them are free!), and evenings wandering through Soho in search of a good bite.

As a solo traveler, I appreciated how easy it was to get around using the Tube, and how people were always willing to help if I looked confused (which was often). I loved Big Ben, London Eye, Oxford Street, among others. I also walked a lot especially in London, so I highly suggest you bring comfortable shoes. Here are my favorites.

But what I loved most was taking day trips from London, Cambridge, Bath, and Brighton were some of my favorites. Each one had its own charm, and being solo meant I could just hop on a train and go wherever I wanted, whenever I wanted.

    Switzerland

A postcard in every direction. If you’re looking for peace, nature, mountains, and safety, Switzerland is one of the best solo travel destinations in Europe. Everything runs on time, the locals are polite and respectful, and the landscapes are absolutely unreal.

I’ll never forget my train ride from Lucerne to Interlaken. I spent the entire journey with my nose pressed to the window. Snowy peaks, green valleys, little wooden houses with flower boxes. It didn’t feel real, Switzerland is one of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen.

Solo travel in Switzerland felt different. It was slower, quieter, and honestly healing. I loved hiking by the lakes, taking cable cars up the mountains, and just enjoying the silence.

One of my favorite solo days was in Lauterbrunnen. I sat by a waterfall, eating cheese and bread I’d picked up from a local market, and just took in the view. No noise, no rush, just me and the mountains.

    Poland

Beautiful, affordable, and full of history. I’ll admit, Poland wasn’t originally on my list, but I’m so glad I went. It turned out to be one of the most affordable and rewarding countries for solo travel in Europe.

I started in Krakow, and it instantly felt like a fairytale. The Old Town was full of live musicians in the streets, cafés tucked into every corner, and that gorgeous main square that I must’ve circled a dozen times.

I visited Auschwitz-Birkenau on a guided tour, and it was one of the most moving experiences of my travels. It’s heavy, but incredibly important to see.

What stood out most to me in Poland was the people; they were kind, helpful, and so proud of their culture. And the food! I ate way too many pierogies, and I still crave them.

Solo travel in Poland felt easy, safe, and full of little surprises, from colorful buildings in Wrocław to peaceful afternoons in Łazienki Park in Warsaw.

CONCLUSION- BEST EUROPEAN COUNTRIES FOR SOLO TRAVELERS

Looking back, every country gave me something different. Italy gave me passion, Germany gave me structure, England gave me ease, Switzerland gave me peace, and Poland gave me heart.
Traveling solo in Europe is one of the most empowering things I’ve ever done. You learn so much about yourself when you’re out there figuring things out, making little mistakes, and discovering small joys along the way.

If you’re thinking about it, just go. You don’t need to have it all planned. You just need a bit of courage, a good backpack, comfortable shoes, and an open heart. The rest will fall into place.

And who knows… maybe your own solo travel story will inspire someone else to do the same.

Let me know in the comments if you’ve been to any of these places or are planning your own solo adventure soon. I’d love to help and hear your story too!
