This post is about the best things to do in Berlin for first-time visitors. Berlin is one of my favorite cities to visit.
When I first arrived in Berlin, I didn’t really know what to expect. I’d heard all the things people usually say: it’s cool, edgy, historic, creative, intense, fun. But it’s one thing to read about Berlin, it’s another to walk those streets, stand in front of a piece of the Wall, hear techno beats from an underground club, and sip on a beer next to a stranger who tells you their life story like you’ve known each other forever.
Berlin was surprising. It was deep and chaotic, but also calm and wide-open. It felt lived-in and layered. And if you’re planning your first trip, let me be your guide. Here’s everything I loved (and you must do) as a first-time visitor to this unforgettable city.
I now offer a custom vacation planning service. Check it out here!
1. Berlin Third Reich and Cold War Walking Tour
I started my Berlin experience with a walking tour focused on its WWII and Cold War history. And honestly, I’m so glad I did. It helped me understand the city in a deeper way right from the start.
Our guide walked us through key sites like the former SS headquarters and Checkpoint Charlie. We stood above the site of Hitler’s bunker, learned about East and West Berlin, and saw remnants of the Berlin Wall up close. Heavy? Yes. But incredibly important. It changed how I viewed everything else I saw that week. Click here for tour.
2. 1-Hour Spree River Cruise
After all that history, I needed a change of pace. So I hopped on a relaxing Spree River cruise.
It’s just an hour long, and such a beautiful way to see Berlin from a different angle. The city looks stunning from the water, especially around Museum Island. I sipped on a cold drink, leaned back in my chair, and let the boat glide through bridges and past buildings I’d walked by earlier. Total reset moment. Click here.
3. Hop-On Hop-Off Berlin Bus Tour
To cover more ground, I grabbed a 24-hour hop-on hop-off ticket, and it was the best decision for my tired feet.
This tour let me explore neighborhoods at my own pace. I’d hop off at Brandenburg Gate, walk around for an hour, grab a snack, and then jump back on to head toward East Side Gallery. Bonus: The audio guide was full of random facts I wouldn’t have known otherwise. Click here.
4. Swing High Over Berlin (Literally!)
Okay, I did not expect to swing off a rooftop in Berlin, but here we are.
This high swing experience was wild and exhilarating. You’re strapped in, lifted above the city, and then, you swing. The views? Unreal. The adrenaline? High. The photos? So worth it.
If you’re someone who loves unique activities with a little edge (literally), this is for you. Click here. It is one of the best things to do in Berlin for first time visitors!
5. Berlin Pub Crawl
Berlin’s nightlife is legendary, and if you want a fun, no-pressure way to meet people and explore bars, this pub crawl is a blast.
We visited four different bars and ended up at a club with VIP entry. There were welcome shots, games, and just a super friendly vibe. Perfect if you’re traveling solo or want to experience the party side of Berlin without the guesswork. Click here.
6. Icebar Berlin
I wasn’t planning to go to an ice bar in Berlin… but someone recommended it, and it ended up being so fun.
You suit up in a thermal jacket, step inside a frozen world, and sip cocktails out of ice glasses. The room is kept at -10°C, and the walls, furniture, everything, it’s all made of ice. It’s gimmicky in the best way. Click here.
7. Charlottenburg Palace
If you need a little royal energy in your trip, Charlottenburg delivers.
This palace is stunning, ornate halls, manicured gardens, and so much history. I wandered through with an audio guide, imagining royal dinners and 18th-century parties. And the gardens? The perfect place for a quiet walk with coffee. Click here.
8. Rooftop Aperitif at the Reichstag Käfer Restaurant
Dining with a view is always a yes for me, and this rooftop aperitif at the Reichstag building was such a treat.
We sipped bubbly, watched the city lights come on, and admired Berlin from above. It’s chic without being stuffy and a beautiful way to wrap up a day of sightseeing. Click here.
9. Berlin “No Diet Club” Food Tour
This food tour might’ve been the highlight of my trip, and I say that as someone who plans vacations around meals.
From döner kebabs to currywurst, cheesy fries, and locally brewed beer, it was a street food lover’s dream. Our guide was hilarious, and we got insider tips on where locals actually eat. I left full, happy, and determined to recreate the potato salad back home (it didn’t go well). Click here.
10. Berlin Craft Beer Tasting and Brewery Tour
To close out the trip, I joined a craft beer tour that took us to three different microbreweries, and it was such a vibe.
We learned about Berlin’s beer scene, chatted with the brewers, and tried everything from IPAs to wheat beers. The group was small, the pours were generous, and it felt like the perfect, relaxed way to wrap up my week. Click here.
CONCLUSION- BEST THINGS TO DO IN BERLIN FOR FIRST TIME VISITORS
Berlin surprised me. It made me think. It made me laugh. It fed me well and challenged my perspective.
It’s not the kind of city that tries to charm you, but somehow, by the end, you realize it has. If it’s your first time visiting, don’t try to see everything. Follow your curiosity, try the food, take the history seriously, and leave room for spontaneity.
Because Berlin isn’t just a place you visit, it’s a place you feel. I hope you enjoyed reading my post on best things to do in Berlin for first time visitors.
