How to Plan your Trip to London- 3 Day Itinerary for London for First Time Visitors

This post is a 3 day itinerary for London especially those visiting for the first time.

There’s just something about London that instantly pulls you in. From the moment I arrived, it felt like stepping into an action movie, red buses whizzing by, historic architecture on every corner, and that mix of royalty and modern city life that’s hard to describe unless you’ve felt it yourself. If you’re planning your first trip and wondering how to spend 3 days in London, I’ve got you covered.

I’m sharing this itinerary like I’d tell a friend, all the good spots, my personal moments, the surprises, the energy, and everything you shouldn’t miss on your first visit to London. It’s not just a guide, it’s my experience.

I now offer a custom vacation planning service. Check it out here!

THINGS TO KNOW- HOW DO I PLAN A 3 DAY TRIP LONDON?

When is the best time to visit London?

London is magical year-round, but if you want pleasant weather without the summer crowds, I recommend late spring (May-June) or early fall (September). I went in May, and the parks were lush, the days were long, and it didn’t rain (much). Winters can be cozy and festive too, Christmas there is really beautiful, just pack a warm coat and prepare yourself for a hot chocolate with marshmallows in every corner.

    How to get around London?

Getting around London was honestly so easy. I used a combination of the Tube and walking, and that covered almost everything. Just make sure to bring comfy shoes, you’ll be walking a lot, especially if you like getting lost in charming neighborhoods like I do.

For convenience, I also recommend the Hop-on Hop-off Sightseeing Bus, especially if you want to hit many landmarks without worrying about routes. You can grab tickets here for the hop on and off bus ticket or I also recommend the Private tour in a cab for 6 people, can take you to all the main tourist attractions and it is more private.

What to do with 3 days in London?

There’s so much to see that planning can get overwhelming, but don’t stress. Whether you love history, good food, culture, or just walking around with the london vibe. London is made for wandering. Besides the popular and iconic places to go these are a few highlights of different plans I tried and let me tell you, they were my favorites and you shouldn’t miss them:

    Where to eat in London?

London’s food scene honestly blew me away. Before my trip, I expected the usual fish and chips and afternoon tea (which, don’t get me wrong, I fully enjoyed), but I wasn’t prepared for how diverse and exciting the food in this city really is. You can literally eat your way around the world without ever leaving London. What I loved most was how each neighborhood had its own personality when it came to food. Whether it was the buzzing stalls at Borough Market, the cozy cafes tucked away in Notting Hill, or the late-night energy in Shoreditch, every meal felt like an experience.

For breakfast, I started my mornings right with The Breakfast Club in Soho. It’s such a vibe, bright, busy, and full of energy, perfect to kickstart a day of exploring. Their classic British breakfast kept me full for hours (and their pancakes? So fluffy). Another favorite was Granger & Co, especially the one in Clerkenwell. The interior is gorgeous, and everything on the menu felt fresh and satisfying. But I have to tell you, I also tried Dishoom’s breakfast (yes, they do breakfast!), and their bacon naan roll is worth waking up early for. Seriously, don’t miss it. And if you’re in the mood for something a little more tucked away, Feya in Marylebone is dreamy, flower walls, pastel colors, and the most Instagrammable breakfast plates.

For lunch, Borough Market completely stole my heart. It’s a must, honestly. I found myself here more than once because the variety is insane. One day, I had the cheesiest cheese toastie that oozed perfectly, and the next, it was paella that tasted like a little escape to Spain. Another spot I loved was Flat Iron, super affordable, amazing steak, and the coolest rustic vibe inside. And don’t sleep on Padella in Borough, it’s cozy, pasta is handmade, and the cacio e pepe was everything. I still think about it!

Dinner in London felt like an event in itself. Dishoom is non-negotiable. I loved it so much I almost went twice in three days. The atmosphere, the chai, the black daal, it’s an experience you won’t forget. And then there’s Sketch, which is a little fancy, but completely worth it. It feels like you’re stepping into an art gallery and a fine dining restaurant at the same time. Another amazing dinner spot was Hoppers in Soho. It’s all about Sri Lankan flavors, spicy, bold, and so satisfying after a long day walking around London.

For that classic London experience, you have to stop for afternoon tea. I booked The Rubens at the Palace, and it was honestly such a treat after a morning of sightseeing. Elegant china, scones that were buttery perfection, and the view of the Royal Mews felt so perfectly British. If you want another gorgeous spot, Sketch also does an iconic afternoon tea, think pink velvet, quirky teapots, and picture-perfect pastries.

Coffee breaks were essential with how much I was walking every day! Monmouth Coffee Company was my go-to for rich, bold coffee that kept me going strong. And Kaffeine, tucked away in Fitzrovia, became my little escape for an afternoon pick-me-up. But I also have to mention Grind in London Bridge, it’s chic, cozy, and their flat whites are top tier. Plus, they do amazing brunch if you happen to linger longer (which I totally did).

And of course, let’s not forget the bars, because London’s nightlife deserves a moment! One of my favorite spots was Nightjar in Shoreditch. It’s a speakeasy-style bar with live jazz and creative cocktails that feel like little works of art. Then there’s The Churchill Arms in Kensington, which is probably the most famous pub in London for good reason. Covered in flowers on the outside and full of character inside, it’s an experience just stepping through the door. And if you’re looking for rooftop views, Radio Rooftop Bar has such a vibe. Sipping cocktails with a view of the Thames and London’s skyline? Absolute perfection to end a busy day.

Honestly, London spoiled me with its food scene. I loved that no matter what mood I was in, fancy dinner, casual lunch, quick coffee, or an elegant tea, there was always a spot that felt just right. Every meal felt like part of the adventure, and I already can’t wait to go back just to eat my way through even more neighborhoods!

Any other tips for visiting London?

    • Bring an umbrella or a light raincoat, even on sunny days.
    • Get an Oyster Card or contactless card for Tube rides.
    • Try not to overpack your itinerary, London is best enjoyed slowly.
    • Stay centrally (like in Soho, Covent Garden, or South Bank) to save time on transport.

STEAL MY 3 DAY ITINERARY FOR LONDON

DAY 1- Icons & River Views

I kicked off my London adventure at St. Paul’s Cathedral, and honestly, I couldn’t have picked a more serene and breathtaking start. The inside is just majestic, those high ceilings, the intricate details, and the peaceful silence made me feel like I was stepping into another world. I even climbed up to the dome for panoramic views over the city,  totally worth the steps!

From there, I strolled across the Millennium Bridge (and yes, I totally felt like I was walking through a Harry Potter scene, remember that epic bridge scene from the movie?). It leads you straight to Tate Modern, and even if you’re not super into art, the building itself is so cool.

After getting my dose of culture, I wandered over to Shakespeare’s Globe. It was surreal standing where the Bard’s work still comes to life centuries later. I didn’t have time to catch a show this time, but even just walking around it gave me chills, in the best way.

I grabbed my lunch at heaven at Borough Market. The smells hit you the moment you get close. So much food, from fresh-baked pastries to cheesy raclette to delicious international eats. I grabbed a gourmet grilled cheese and fresh juice and ate by the river, a perfect little London moment.

In the afternoon, I took a Thames River Cruise, which I personally highly recommend. It was such a relaxing way to see the city from a different perspective. The views of Tower Bridge, London Eye, and all those historic buildings gliding past, amazing. Plus, it’s great for photos and not too long (mine was about 2 hours).

To wrap up the day, I wandered around Covent Garden, it’s such a vibe. Street performers, little boutique shops, cute cafes, and just the energy of the place is infectious. I stayed until dinner and just soaked it all in.

DAY 2- Royal London & Museums

Day two was all about London’s royal side. I started at Buckingham Palace and if you can time it right, the Changing of the Guard is such a cool experience, and super iconic, with all the music and ceremony. Even just standing in front of the palace felt surreal, like I was in a postcard.

From there, I walked over to Westminster Abbey, the history here is unreal. It’s where kings and queens have been crowned, and the architecture inside? Jaw dropping. Right nearby are Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, and they’re just as stunning in real life as you’d imagine. I snapped so many photos and just stood there for a while with that beautiful view.

In the afternoon, I headed to one of London’s incredible museums. I couldn’t decide between the Natural History Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum, so I peeked at both! The Natural History Museum is just a dream (that dinosaur skeleton in the main hall?!).

For a little indulgence, I booked Afternoon Tea at The Rubens at the Palace, and it was everything. Elegant tea sets, finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream… I mean, does it get more British than that? Definitely one of my favorite memories of the trip. It is a must!!If you’ve still got energy in the evening, I totally recommend catching a West End show, it’s London’s Broadway, and the vibe is incredible. Or just head for a cozy pub near Piccadilly Circus, the area buzzes with life at night, and it’s a fun way to end your day.

DAY 3- Markets, Art & a little escape

For my last day in London, I wanted something a little more relaxed and artsy. I started the morning in Notting Hill, and I’m still not over how adorable this neighborhood is. Think pastel colored houses, cute cafes, quirky bookstores, and vintage treasures at Portobello Road Market. It felt like walking through a rom-com.

Next, I made my way to the Frameless Immersive Art Experience, and WOW, this was honestly one of the coolest art experiences I’ve ever had. You’re completely surrounded by moving projections of famous artworks, and the music and visuals create this dreamlike, otherworldly vibe. I loved every second of it.

Depending on your mood, you can grab lunch nearby or head to another iconic foodie spot like Camden Market, it’s quirky, colorful, and packed with delicious eats and indie shops. I tried some Korean street food and got a cute handmade candle from a local vendor.

For something totally different, I signed up for a Traditional Tea & Scone Making Class, and let me tell you, it was such a fun, hands-on way to end the trip. We learned how to make the fluffiest scones ever and brewed proper English tea. Plus, I got to take home my own little box of treats!

London is truly the kind of place where history meets creativity, and you’ll never run out of things to see, eat, or experience. Hope this itinerary helps you plan your dream trip, and if you follow it, I promise you’ll fall in love with this city just like I did.

Bonus Day Trips from London (If You Have Extra Time)

If you’re lucky enough to have more than 3 days in London or just want to add a day trip to switch things up, there are two unforgettable places I’d totally recommend:
Stonehenge day trip: Seeing those ancient stones in person was surreal. I joined a half day tour from London, and it was just the right amount of time to enjoy the site without rushing. The energy there is honestly something you have to feel for yourself.

Cotswold day trip: Total fairytale vibes. Think stone cottages, quiet countryside lanes, cozy tea rooms, it’s the peaceful escape you didn’t know you needed. I loved how different it felt from busy London.

Both are easy to book and really worth it if you want a taste of England beyond the city.

CONCLUSION- 3 DAY ITINERARY FOR LONDON

London has this beautiful way of mixing old charm and modern energy, and even with just 3 days, you’ll get a real taste of it all. From iconic landmarks to quirky markets, from historic sites to hidden cafes, it’s a city that sticks with you.

If it’s your first time in London, this itinerary gives you the perfect guide on what to do, culture, food, and a few surprises. Don’t stress too much about doing it all. Just wander, enjoy, and let the city show you its magic.

Let me know if you’re planning your trip, I’d love to hear what you’re most excited for!
