This post is about the best beach towns for a weekend getaway from Orlando.
There’s something about living in Orlando, no matter how much you love the city, there comes a moment when you just need the ocean. Maybe it’s the humidity, maybe it’s the pace, or maybe it’s just the Floridian in me, but sometimes all I crave is salty hair, bare feet, and that feeling of sand sticking to your sunscreen.
The good news? Orlando might be landlocked, but it’s surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches in Florida, each just a short drive away, each with its own personality.
Over the years, I’ve turned spontaneous beach escapes into something of a ritual. A packed tote bag, a playlist full of summer songs, and a two-hour drive that always ends with me barefoot in the sand. These are the best beach towns for a weekend getaway from Orlando, places I’ve visited, loved, and can’t wait to go back to.
I now offer a custom vacation planning service. Check it out here!
Cocoa Beach: The Classic, Laid-Back Escape
Cocoa Beach was the first beach I ever visited after moving to Orlando, and to this day, it feels like my coastal comfort zone. It’s only about an hour away, which makes it the easiest weekend escape, close enough for spontaneity, but far enough that you feel like you’ve left the city behind.
The drive itself is therapeutic, palm trees lining the highway, the sky getting wider, the air saltier as you get closer. I still remember the first time I caught a glimpse of the ocean through the bridge, that flash of turquoise that made me roll down my window and breathe it all in.
Cocoa Beach has this old-school Florida charm. It’s casual, relaxed, and full of surf shacks that look like they’ve been there forever. I usually start my mornings at Juice ‘N Java Cafe, their acai bowls are the kind of breakfast that feels like sunshine in a bowl. After that, I love walking along the Cocoa Beach Pier, grabbing a coconut, and watching surfers catch waves just beyond the pilings.
If you’re feeling adventurous, take a surfing lesson at Cocoa Beach, it’s where many locals learned to ride their first wave. I tried it once, and while I was terrible (I fell three times before even standing up), I couldn’t stop laughing.
By sunset, I usually end up barefoot at Coconuts on the Beach, one of those beach bars where time doesn’t exist. There’s live music, margaritas that come in mason jars, and a view that makes you forget every worry you brought with you.
Cocoa Beach feels like that friend who doesn’t care what you’re wearing or how your hair looks, it just wants you to relax.
New Smyrna Beach: The Bohemian Soul
If Cocoa is classic, New Smyrna Beach is its artsy, free-spirited cousin. About an hour and fifteen minutes from Orlando, this beach town is effortlessly cool, think local art galleries, surf culture, and coffee shops that double as creative spaces.
I fell for New Smyrna the second I parked near Flagler Avenue. It’s one of those streets that pulls you in, lined with pastel-colored shops, local bakeries, and beach cruisers rolling by at a lazy pace.
The morning I arrived, I stopped at Third Wave Cafe for brunch. The patio is shaded by palm trees and fairy lights, and the smell of espresso and wood-fired pizza fills the air. I ordered a lavender latte and sat there listening to the quiet hum of locals chatting about their weekend surf plans.
The beach here feels wild in the best way, wide stretches of golden sand, gentle waves, and the sound of seagulls that seem to echo forever. I love walking barefoot along the shore, especially near Smyrna Dunes Park. The boardwalk there wraps around dunes and leads to views that feel untouched, the kind of beauty that humbles you.
What I love most about New Smyrna is its energy, it’s creative, a little boho, and full of warmth. There’s even a monthly art walk where local artists open their studios, and you can wander from gallery to gallery with a glass of wine in hand.
For dinner, I always go to The Garlic, it’s cozy, candlelit, and smells like heaven. Their pasta tastes like something straight out of Italy. Sitting there, surrounded by twinkling lights and live music, you realize that New Smyrna isn’t just a beach town, it’s a feeling.
Clearwater Beach: The Dreamy, Picture-Perfect Escape
I’m going to be honest, the first time I went to Clearwater Beach, I thought it might be too touristy for me. But then I saw that water, the kind of turquoise that looks like a filter, except it’s real, and I was instantly hooked.
It’s about a two-hour drive from Orlando, and it’s one of those trips that’s worth every minute. The sand here is like powdered sugar, soft, white, and warm beneath your feet.
I arrived on a Friday afternoon and checked into the Opal Sands Resort. The room had floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, and I remember just standing there, watching the sunset paint the sky orange and pink. There’s something about the Gulf coast sunsets that feel different, slower, almost cinematic.
Clearwater has a bit of everything, beach bars, dolphins swimming offshore, and just enough nightlife to keep things interesting. During the day, I joined a Dolphin Watching Cruise, and seeing dolphins leap in the wild was one of those moments that stops time for a second.
For lunch, I headed to Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill, an Orlando favorite for seafood. The grouper sandwich there deserves its own love letter. I sat outside, listening to a local band, toes in the sand, drink in hand, and thought, this is exactly where I need to be.
In the evening, Pier 60 comes alive, street performers, artists, families, and couples all gathering to watch the sunset together. I grabbed an ice cream and joined them, and it felt like being part of a shared ritual, a celebration of the day’s beauty.
Clearwater may be popular, but somehow it still feels personal. It’s romantic, vibrant, and picture-perfect, the kind of beach that makes you promise you’ll come back before you’ve even left.
Vero Beach: The Quiet, Elegant Escape
If Clearwater is lively and bright, Vero Beach is its calm, elegant counterpart. About two hours southeast of Orlando, it’s the kind of place you go when you want to breathe.
The first time I went, I remember pulling into town and noticing how peaceful it felt, no big crowds, no flashy signs, just tree-lined streets and ocean breezes. Vero is sophisticated but not pretentious, the kind of destination that whispers instead of shouts.
I stayed at Costa d’Este Beach Resort & Spa, a stunning oceanfront property owned by Gloria Estefan (yes, that Gloria Estefan). The vibe was relaxed and luxurious, and waking up to the sound of waves outside my window was pure bliss.
My mornings usually start with a long walk along the beach, the sand here is golden and soft, and the waves gentle enough to wade in. Afterward, I grab coffee and breakfast at Cravings, their pastries are unreal, especially the key lime tart.
During one trip, I took a kayaking tour through the Indian River Lagoon and ended up seeing dolphins and manatees swimming beside me. It was peaceful, surreal, and easily one of my favorite Florida experiences ever.
In the afternoon, I wandered through the Vero Beach Museum of Art, small but beautifully curated, and ended the day with dinner at Ocean Grill. It’s an iconic spot perched right over the water, and dining there at sunset felt like something out of a dream.
Vero Beach isn’t about parties or crowds, it’s about serenity. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to disconnect, slow down, and just be.
