Best cities to visit in Italy

This post is about the best cities to visit in Italy. Italy is one of those rare places that stays with you long after you’ve left. It’s in the way the light falls on the terracotta rooftops, the way the air smells like espresso and history, the way the sea breeze mixes with the sound of church bells… but more than anything, Italy is a feeling.

The first time I landed in Italy, I remember stepping out of the airport and thinking, This is it, the place I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid. And Italy didn’t disappoint. It wrapped itself around me like a warm scarf, feeding me, surprising me, slowing me down, making me feel more alive than ever.

What I want to share with you is not a list, you know I don’t do lists, but pieces of the cities that touched my heart. Cities that made me laugh, get lost, eat too much pasta, cry at sunsets, and feel like I belonged even if just for a moment.

Come with me… let’s wander Italy together.

1.Rome: The Eternal City That Feels Like a Living Museum

Rome was my beginning, the first city that welcomed me and showed me how it feels to walk inside history. I still remember seeing the Colosseum for the first time. It wasn’t even intentional; I turned a corner and there it was, massive and glowing in late afternoon light, as if it had been waiting for me.

Rome is intense, chaotic, beautiful. And the food? Don’t even get me started.

One night I found myself in Trastevere, a safe, bohemian neighborhood full of warm light and chatter. I ended up at Da Enzo al 29 and had a carbonara that felt like a spiritual moment. Affordable to moderate (€12-€18), and absolutely worth the line.

Another evening, I joined a moonlit walk and saw Rome differently, calm, reflective, poetic. If you want something magical, you have to try the Rome Night Tour.

Rome made me feel alive… like every street had a story and I was meant to hear it. Also, here is my packing list for Rome.

2.Florence: The City That Softened My Heart

Florence felt like a warm hug from the moment I stepped out of the train station. The air smelled like leather shops and pastries, and the Arno River sparkled like someone sprinkled gold dust on it.

This city felt softer, slower, more intimate than Rome. I wandered the narrow streets, stopping for gelato twice a day because… Florence.

One night, after watching the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo, my legs were tired but my heart felt so full. I found this incredible dinner spot called Trattoria Marione, affordable, safe area, packed with locals. Their ribollita (Tuscan vegetable stew) tasted like home, even though I was far from mine.

And if you love art, you must do the Uffizi Gallery Skip-the-Line Tour. Standing in front of Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” gave me goosebumps.

Florence feels like falling in love, slow, beautiful, unforgettable.

3.Venice: A Floating Dream That Doesn’t Feel Real

The moment you step out of the vaporetto, Venice hits you with this surreal beauty that no photo can capture. The sound of water instead of traffic, the way the buildings rise straight from the canals, the maze-like alleys where getting lost becomes part of the romance.

One of my favorite experiences was dinner at Osteria alle Testiere, seafood so fresh it tasted like the sea kissed every bite. It’s intermediate to high, but worth every euro. The area is peaceful and safe, especially at night.

And please, promise me you’ll take a gondola ride just once. I booked this serene sunset experience:
Venice Gondola Ride. Watching the sky turn orange reflected in the canals made me emotional in the best way.

Venice isn’t just beautiful, it feels like stepping into a dream you don’t want to wake up from.

4.Milan: The City That Taught Me Style and Comfort

Milan surprised me. I thought it would be all fashion and business… but this city has soul. Hidden soul, but it’s there. My first meal was at Trattoria Milanese and the saffron risotto felt like comfort in a bowl. The city felt colder at first, but the food warmed me up instantly.

One night, I grabbed a slice of pizza from Pizzeria Spontini, cheap, delicious, thick, cheesy, and sat at the foot of the Duomo watching people pass by. Safe, lively, unforgettable. And if you want something iconic, do the Duomo Rooftop Tour. Walking on the rooftop felt like walking on clouds.

Milan taught me that beauty isn’t always loud, sometimes it’s quiet and stylish. My packing essentials for Milan.

5.Naples: The Soul of Southern Italy

Naples is wild, loud, authentic, energetic, and I fell in love with it almost instantly. This city has character. Chaos. Passion. And the pizza? My God. I went to L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele, yes, the one from Eat Pray Love, and the margherita for €5 was pure heaven. Cheap, safe enough in the busy areas, and absolutely unforgettable.

The waterfront at sunset, the old Spanish Quarter with laundry hanging above your head… everything felt like a movie. One of my best experiences ever was taking the Day Trip to Pompeii & Mount Vesuvius. History, tragedy, beauty, all in one.

Naples made me feel more alive than any other city.

6.Sorrento: The Sweet Beginning of the Amalfi Coast

Sorrento felt like a warm vacation inside a vacation. Lemon trees everywhere, calm sea views, and food that tasted like sunshine itself.

I stayed near the marina, in an area that felt incredibly safe and full of cheerful locals. One night, I ate at Ristorante Bagni Delfino, the seafood risotto and sunset over the Bay of Naples were a perfect combination. Moderate to high prices, but the view alone was worth it. And if you want a magical day, the Amalfi Coast Day Tour from Sorrento is breathtaking.

Sorrento feels like letting your shoulders drop and finally relaxing.

      7.Verona: The Romantic Surprise

I never expected Verona to steal my heart… but wow. It’s softer than Florence, quieter than Rome, and as romantic as Venice but easier to breathe.

The moment I walked into Piazza delle Erbe, I felt like I was inside a Renaissance painting. I spent the evening watching couples walk near Juliet’s balcony, listening to street musicians fill the air with Italian songs. Dinner at Locandina Cappello was cozy and intermediate in price, their Amarone risotto was unforgettable. And the city is extremely safe, walkable, and magical.

Verona felt like falling into a love story you didn’t expect.

8.Bologna: The Food Capital That Changed Everything

If Italy had a stomach, it would be Bologna. Everything here revolves around food, tagliatelle al ragù, tortellini, mortadella, lasagna… all born here, all top-tier comfort food.

The first time I tasted ragù in Bologna, I was literally silent for a moment. It tasted like everything good in life. One evening I walked into Trattoria dal Biassanot in a safe, central area, and ordered tortellini in brodo, little pockets of heaven floating in broth. Affordable to moderate. If you go, take the Bologna Food Walking Tour. It’s one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.

      Bologna felt warm… comforting… like a grandmother’s kitchen.

9.Cinque Terre: The Coastline That Stole My Breath

Cinque Terre is not just beautiful, it’s breathtaking.
Cliffside homes painted in rainbow colors, the sea crashing below, lemon trees, stray cats that look like they own the towns… it’s pure magic.

I remember hiking between Monterosso and Vernazza and stopping constantly just to breathe in the views. It felt like therapy. Dinner in Vernazza at Belforte felt surreal, waves crashing below, seafood so fresh you could taste the saltwater. Intermediate to expensive prices depending on the dish. And please, don’t skip the Cinque Terre Sunset Boat Tour, I cried. Beautiful tears.

Cinque Terre feels like standing at the edge of the world and loving every second.
