This post is about the best day trips to take from Miami, FL.
Okay, let’s be real. Miami is a whole vibe on its own, beaches, pastel buildings, cafecito on every corner, and that warm, humid air that feels like a hug. But if you’re anything like me, sometimes the explorer in you wants to wander a little farther. The good news? South Florida is filled with quick and dreamy escapes, and I had the best time using Miami as my home base and heading out for mini-adventures.
One day I was kayaking through the Everglades with alligators (safely!), the next I was sipping mojitos in Key West watching the sun melt into the ocean. Whether you’re craving nature, island vibes, or a splash of glam, there’s something nearby for every mood. So if you’re planning a trip to Miami and wondering where else to explore, I’ve got you covered.
I now offer a custom vacation planning service. Check it out here!
Key Largo
Key Largo is about a 1.5-hour drive from Miami, and the second you cross that first bridge onto the Overseas Highway, everything shifts. The colors get brighter, the mood gets lighter, and the water? Unreal.
I went snorkeling at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and I swear I’ve never seen so many shades of blue in one place. Floating above coral reefs, spotting neon fish darting past, it was like swimming inside a screensaver. Afterwards, I grabbed lunch at The Fish House, a local favorite where the Key Lime pie is basically mandatory.
You can also do kayaking, glass-bottom boat tours, or just post up with a cold drink and watch the boats roll in. Key Largo has this breezy, low-key magic that makes you slow down and just be.
Key West
Oh, Key West. This one is a bit of a longer drive (about 3.5 to 4 hours), but it is so worth it, and honestly, the road trip down through the Keys is half the fun. I blasted music, rolled down the windows, and soaked up those ocean views that go on forever.
Once I got to Key West, I headed straight for Duval Street for a wander, there’s something happening on every block. I popped into Blue Heaven for brunch and ended up staying way too long because their outdoor garden feels like a tropical dream (plus: live music and mimosas).
Later, I visited the Ernest Hemingway Home and the Southernmost Point. But the real showstopper? Sunset at Mallory Square. There were performers, art vendors, and everyone clapping as the sun dipped into the ocean. Pure magic.
Fort Lauderdale
Just 40 minutes from Miami, Fort Lauderdale is like the chill cousin who still knows how to party. It’s got yachts, canals, and a laid-back vibe that feels just right for a day of exploring.
I started my visit with a stroll down Las Olas Boulevard, boutiques, art galleries, and cute cafes galore. Then I did a boat tour through the Intracoastal, ogling at waterfront mansions and pretending I lived in one (a girl can dream). For lunch, I stopped at Coconuts by the water, where the conch fritters were ridiculously good.
There’s also a great beach scene here. I spent the afternoon lounging by the waves and then grabbed gelato before heading back to Miami. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel instantly on vacation.

West Palm Beach
West Palm Beach is about 1.5 to 2 hours away and feels just a little more polished and posh. Think palm-lined streets, designer shops, and beachy-chic everything. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I ended up loving it.
I spent my morning at The Norton Museum of Art (which is stunning, by the way), then wandered through the waterfront promenade at Clematis Street. For lunch, I treated myself at RH Rooftop Restaurant, which is not only delicious but absolutely gorgeous.
If you have time, check out the nearby Palm Beach Island too, the architecture alone is worth the detour. West Palm has this dreamy, resort-like feel that I totally didn’t want to leave.
Everglades National Park
You can’t come to South Florida and not go to the Everglades. It’s only about an hour away and completely unlike anything else. Think wide open skies, sawgrass prairies, and a stillness that feels ancient.
I booked an airboat tour, and it was such a rush. Gliding across the water, spotting alligators and herons in the wild, it felt like a real-life safari. The guides were funny and super knowledgeable, and the whole experience felt really immersive.
After the tour, I stopped at Gator Grill for some classic gator bites and fries, it was surprisingly good! If you’re a nature lover (or even just nature-curious), the Everglades will blow you away.
Bimini, Bahamas
Okay, hear me out, you can take a ferry to the Bahamas for the day. The Bahamas. From Miami. I took the high-speed ferry to Bimini and was on the island in about two hours. Wild.
The moment I arrived, I kicked off my sandals and went straight to the beach. Bimini has this mellow, barefoot luxury vibe that makes you want to unplug. I snorkeled the SS Sapona shipwreck, lounged on Radio Beach, and had the freshest conch salad at Joe’s Conch Shack, a little shack by the water.
It felt like a true escape without needing a plane ticket. Just bring your passport, sunscreen, and a beachy playlist, you’re set.
Naples
Naples is about 2 hours west of Miami across the Tamiami Trail, and the moment I arrived, it felt like a breath of fresh (salt) air. It’s elegant, peaceful, and full of stunning architecture and sunsets that look airbrushed.
I spent my day strolling through 5th Avenue South, which is full of chic boutiques and open-air cafes. For lunch, I ate at Campiello, an Italian spot with the dreamiest patio and homemade pasta that I’m still thinking about.
Later, I walked Naples Pier and just watched the dolphins swim by. The beaches here are wide, white, and uncrowded, perfect for a slow afternoon of doing absolutely nothing.
Fort Myers
Fort Myers is about 2.5 hours from Miami and has this low-key, coastal-town feel that’s super welcoming. It’s perfect if you’re into a quieter beach day with a little history mixed in.
I started with a visit to the Edison & Ford Winter Estates, yes, that Edison. The grounds are gorgeous and the museum is surprisingly fun. Then I headed to Fort Myers Beach and found a cute little spot called Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille for lunch. Their Yucatan shrimp is legendary.
The beaches here are soft and shallow, great for shell hunting or just wading in. It’s one of those places that feels like Florida in its purest form, sunny, simple, and serene.
CONCLUSION- BEST DAY TRIPS FROM MIAMI
What I love most about day trips from Miami is how wildly different each one feels. One minute you’re sipping rosé in Naples, the next you’re flying over the Everglades on an airboat, or dancing to steel drums in Bimini. There’s just so much to see without going very far.
Miami makes for the perfect launching pad, whether you’re craving nature, luxury, culture, or total beach bum bliss. So if you’re planning your trip, don’t just stay put. Hit the road (or hop a boat!) and see what the rest of South Florida has in store. You might just fall in love with more than one place.
I hope you enjoyed reading my post on best day trips from Miami. Safe travels and happy day tripping!
