Walt Disney World Tips for First Timers

This post is about Walt Disney World tips for first timers planning to visit the theme park in Orlando, FL.

There’s just something about Disney World that feels like pure magic. Even before you step inside, you can already feel the energy buzzing in the air, the music, the colors, the excitement on every single person’s face. It honestly doesn’t matter how old you are or how many times you go there; the second you see Cinderella’s Castle, you’re a kid again. Trust me, I felt it. Even for a Florida resident (me). That rush of joy? It’s real.

But let me tell you, planning your Disney adventure isn’t just about buying your ticket and showing up. There’s a whole world (pun totally intended) of tips and little hacks that make the difference between a good trip and an amazing one. So here’s my full guide, written like I’m telling you all my secrets over coffee, because if you’re heading to Disney soon, you’re going to want to soak in every bit of this!

I now offer a custom vacation planning service. Check it out here!

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO TO DISNEY WORLD

Okay, let’s get this straight, Disney World is massive. It’s not just one park, it’s a full-on magical universe with four different theme parks, two water parks, plus Disney Springs for shopping and dining. Add in all the resorts and transportation options, and you’ve got an entire city of fun.

    The parks:

Honestly, it can feel a little overwhelming at first. But once you understand the flow, it all makes sense. You’ll want to plan which parks you’re visiting each day, especially if you’re doing Park Hopper (more on that later). And heads up: 2025 is all about planning early, because Genie+ and park reservations are still a thing!

Also, wear comfy shoes. I cannot stress this enough. My step counter hit 20,000 steps a day and I felt every single one of them!

When is the best time to visit Walt Disney World?

So here’s the honest truth: there’s really no “quiet” time at Disney anymore, but some months are definitely better than others. I went in early spring, and it was amazing, warm but not too hot, and way less humid than summer.

From what I saw and felt, January to early March and late August to early November tend to be the sweet spots. Summer (June–August) is super crowded, and while the energy is fun, the heat is real. Like, melt-your-Mickey-ears real.

If you love Halloween or Christmas, Disney goes all out! Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party are full of parades, fireworks, and themed treats. It feels like Disney is giving you a hug wrapped in sparkles and cinnamon sugar.

How to get to Disney World?

One of the things I loved most? Disney transportation is actually part of the adventure. There’s the iconic Monorail, the super convenient buses, and my personal favorite, the Disney Skyliner, those little gondolas floating over the parks made me feel like I was in a fairytale!

If you’re staying at a Disney resort, transportation is included (huge win). If not, don’t worry, rideshares like Uber and Lyft work well, and Disney’s parking is very organized if you’re driving yourself.

Pro tip: Plan extra time for transportation, especially for early morning reservations or park openings. I gave myself about 60-90 minutes just to be safe, and it paid off!

What to pack for a trip to Disney World?

Let’s just say, I learned a few things the hard way! Pack smart, and you’ll enjoy every moment so much more.

    • Comfy walking shoes: forget the cute sandals, trust me.
    • Portable charger: you’ll use your phone nonstop for the app, photos, and Genie+
    • Reusable water bottl: hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
    • Cooling towels or portable fan: life-savers in the Florida heat.
    • Poncho or compact umbrella: because Florida weather loves to shower us with surprises.
    • Sunscreen + sunglasses + hat: the sun may surprise you!
    • Small crossbody bag or backpack: keep everything handy. I loved having snacks and a mini first-aid kit too!

DISNEY WORLD PARK BREAKDOWN: MY EXPERIENCE + MUST-DOS

Alright, let’s get into the best part: the parks! Each park felt like its own little universe, and I’m so excited to tell you what made them special for me.

    MAGIC KINGDOM

Magic Kingdom is where the magic hits you right in the heart. The first time I saw Cinderella’s Castle, I actually gasped. It’s even more stunning in person, especially when the sunlight hits it just right. Main Street USA was buzzing with families, balloons, and the scent of sweet treats in the air, it felt like I had stepped into my childhood dreams.

I spent hours here and still felt like it wasn’t enough. There’s just something so joyful about watching the parades and hearing the iconic Disney songs playing as you walk. And don’t even get me started on the fireworks at night, Happily Ever After had me wiping away actual tears.

My Must-Do List for Magic Kingdom:

    • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (fun and just thrilling enough!)
    • Haunted Mansion (so much spooky charm!)
    • Pirates of the Caribbean (a true Disney classic)
    • Space Mountain (wild, dark fun!)
    • TRON Lightcycle / Run (new, fast, and futuristic, LOVED it!)
    • Castle Fireworks Show (get a spot early, you won’t regret it!)

    EPCOT

EPCOT was such a surprise. I knew I’d love the food (hello, World Showcase!), but I didn’t expect to have so much fun bouncing between futuristic rides and tasting my way around 11 different countries.

Walking through EPCOT felt like the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. One moment I was designing my dream car at Test Track, and the next I was sipping wine in the France pavilion, feeling all kinds of sophisticated. And let me tell you, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind? Blew. My. Mind. It’s a coaster-meets-concert, and you’ll be dancing in your seat!

    My Must-Do List for EPCOT:

    • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (epic doesn’t even cover it)
    • Test Track (design your car and race to the finish!)
    • Soarin’ Around the World (felt like flying!)
    • Eat and drink around the World Showcase
    • Catch the night show at the lagoon (magical way to end the day)

    HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS

I have to admit, Hollywood Studios might just be the most adrenaline-packed of all the parks. As soon as I walked in, I could feel the energy. It’s like stepping into your favorite movies, and it does not disappoint.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge made me feel like a true rebel, wandering the markets of Batuu and sipping blue milk like I’d lived there all my life. Slinky Dog Dash is pure fun (I couldn’t stop laughing), and Rise of the Resistance? It’s an experience, not just a ride. From the moment you step into the queue, you’re part of the story.

My Must-Do List for Hollywood Studios:

    • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (unmissable)
    • Slinky Dog Dash (joyful and fun for all ages!)
    • Tower of Terror (expect screams… lots of them)
    • Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (adorable and surprisingly exciting)
    • Rock β€˜n’ Roller Coaster (speed and adrenaline to the max!)
    • Blue Milk at Galaxy’s Edge (because you have to try it!)

    ANIMAL KINGDOM

Animal Kingdom felt like such a breath of fresh air (literally!). It’s lush and green and so beautifully immersive. I loved wandering the paths, hearing the sounds of exotic animals, and just soaking up the atmosphere. It almost didn’t feel like a theme park, it felt like an adventure halfway around the world.

Pandora: The World of Avatar is absolutely breathtaking, especially at night when everything glows. And Flight of Passage? Honestly, it’s hard to describe just how incredible it feels to soar through Pandora’s floating mountains. This ride alone is worth the trip!

My Must-Do List for Animal Kingdom:

    • Avatar Flight of Passage (jaw-dropping and immersive)
    • Expedition Everest (watch out for the Yeti!)
    • Kilimanjaro Safaris (up-close wildlife adventure)
    • Walk through Pandora at night (it’s magical!)
    • Grilled corn and snacks at Harambe Market
    • Festival of the Lion King show (so good I wanted to sing along!)

Where to eat in Disney World?

Food in Disney World is honestly a whole adventure on its own, and I seriously underestimated just how much I’d love eating my way through the parks. I went in thinking, β€œIt’s theme park food, how special can it be?” But let me tell you, I was so wrong. Disney takes food to another level, from the cutest Mickey-shaped snacks to world-class dining experiences that feel like mini vacations in themselves.

At Magic Kingdom, the Dole Whip was my personal savior on hot afternoons. Sweet, tropical, and perfectly refreshing. I also had way too many corn dog nuggets at Casey’s Corner, but they’re just that good when you need a quick bite between rides. And of course, Mickey-shaped pretzels became my daily tradition, because, well, you’re in Disney!

EPCOT completely spoiled me. Eating and drinking around the World Showcase was like taking a foodie world tour. In France, I grabbed buttery croissants and a glass of champagne for breakfast (because why not?). In Mexico, the margaritas were dangerously good, and the fish and chips in the UK pavilion were the perfect comfort food. And don’t even get me started on the festivals! During the International Food & Wine Festival, I honestly lost track of how many small plates I tried.

Over at Hollywood Studios, I had my Star Wars moment sipping blue milk at Galaxy’s Edge, honestly, it tastes better than it looks! For a proper meal, Woody’s Lunch Box surprised me with its nostalgic comfort food, and those lunchbox tarts were the perfect little sugar rush before jumping on the next ride.

And then there’s Animal Kingdom, where the flavors feel as adventurous as the park itself. I loved the cheeseburger pods at Satu’li Canteen, they sound strange, but they’re so tasty. I also grabbed grilled corn at Harambe Market, and it was chef’s kiss.

Outside the parks, Disney Springs is a total foodie paradise. I ended my days here more than once, just wandering and finding something new to try. The Boathouse was amazing for fresh seafood with a view, and Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ served up the kind of Southern comfort food that feels like a hug on a plate. The moonshine cocktails? Highly recommend.

Disney really knows how to make food part of the magic. I never expected to come home with a camera roll and a food diary full of memories, but here we are!

CONCLUSION- DISNEY WORLD TIPS FOR FIRST TIMERS

Disney World is so much more than rides and fireworks. It’s this incredible feeling of wonder that wraps around you from the moment you arrive until the moment you (reluctantly) leave. What surprised me the most wasn’t just the magic in the parks, it was how the smallest details made the biggest memories. The unexpected laughter on a roller coaster, the way cast members go out of their way to make you smile, the scent of popcorn in the air, and that first glimpse of the castle as you walk down Main Street. It’s pure happiness, bottled up and sprinkled with pixie dust.

Every day felt like a choose-your-own-adventure story, and no matter which path I picked, it was always the right one. Whether I was screaming my head off on Tower of Terror, floating through Pandora at night, or simply sitting with an ice cream watching a parade, I felt completely wrapped up in the joy of it all.

So, if you’ve been dreaming about Disney World, this is your sign to go for it. Plan it, pack your comfy shoes, bring your biggest appetite, and most importantly, let yourself enjoy every little moment. Don’t worry about rushing to do it all, just soak in the magic that’s all around you.

And trust me, once you’ve experienced it, you’ll be counting the days until your next trip back. Because that’s the thing about Disney: it doesn’t matter how many times you go, it always feels like the first time. I’ve been a Florida resident for over a decade, so let me know if you need help with your Florida itinerary or guide. Happy Travels!

I sooo want to go to Disney. I’m in LA right now and I’m too tuckered out from Universal to do another theme park while I’m here. BUT, I think it’s worth waiting until I can go to World instead of Land. Thanks for this!

    23. November 6, 2017 / 12:14 pm

I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit that in my 33 years of life, I have yet to go to WDW…even though I’ve been to Orlando multiple times lol. I have friends who are Disney obsessed, and say I need to go. Your post solidified their opinion. I need to make it there!

I’ve been going to Disney World since before I can even remember. It is such an amazing place, and always gives me such a positive feeling. Magic Kingdom is always going to be my favorite park. I love the traditional Disney aspects of it! I have been lucky enough to travel To Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disney, but the WDW Magic Kingdom is still my favorite!
