What to know when traveling to Orlando, FL. This post is the ultimate travel guide to Orlando for first time visitors. My story and travel tips.
There’s something about Orlando that just feels electric from the moment you arrive. It’s like the air itself is charged with excitement, between the sunshine, the palm trees, and the endless possibilities for adventure, you can’t help but feel a little more alive here. Most people think of Orlando and immediately picture the famous theme parks (and trust me, they’re incredible), but there’s so much more to this city than roller coasters and Mickey ears. Orlando is a vibrant mix of magic and surprise, where every day holds something new and unexpected.
What I love most about Orlando is the energy. It doesn’t matter if you’re walking down Main Street in one of the parks, cruising through the city in search of good food, or catching the golden hour light over the lakes, there’s always this undercurrent of joy that makes even the simplest moments feel special. It’s a city that knows how to have fun, but also knows when to slow things down and let you soak it all in.
In this guide, I want to take you through the best of what Orlando has to offer, not just the famous theme parks (although they’re a huge part of the magic), but also the hidden gems, the food adventures, the scenic spots, and the experiences that give this place its unforgettable character. Whether you’re here for the thrill rides, the shopping, or just to enjoy a little Florida sunshine, Orlando has something for you. And honestly? It might just surprise you in the best way.

THINGS TO KNOW- HOW DO I PLAN A TRIP TO ORLANDO?
First things first: Orlando is huge. Everything looks close on the map, but between the parks, shopping outlets, and neighborhoods, you’ll definitely need to plan your routes.
Also, Orlando is basically always sunny, but it can get humid, especially in the summer. Bring comfy clothes, good walking shoes (this is non-negotiable), and don’t forget sunscreen. Seriously, you’ll thank me later.
Oh, and be prepared for crowds. But here’s the thing: the energy is contagious. Everyone’s excited, the kids are thrilled, and even standing in line becomes part of the fun. It feels like you’re part of one big, happy adventure.
When is the best time to visit Orlando?
I personally recommend early spring, and honestly? It was perfect. The weather was warm but not unbearably hot, and the crowds were just manageable. Generally, March to May and September to early November are great times to visit. The summer months (June to August) are peak season, which means longer lines and lots of heat, but also tons of energy and events.
If you love Halloween, September and October are fantastic, Disney and Universal go all out with decorations and themed nights. And if you want that holiday magic, November and December are simply magical.
How to get around Orlando?
Okay, let’s talk about transportation. I quickly realized that renting a car is the easiest way to get around Orlando, especially if you’re planning to explore beyond the parks.
That said, if you’re staying in one of the big resort areas (like Disney Springs or near Universal), you can easily use hotel shuttles or rideshares like Uber and Lyft. I personally used a mix of everything: hotel shuttle in the morning, Uber when I was too tired to wait, and sometimes just walking around my hotel area to discover local spots.
Pro tip: Download all the apps before you go and check if your hotel offers any free transportation perks!
What to pack for Orlando?
Here’s what I wish someone had told me before my trip:
- Comfy walking shoes: No cute but painful sandals. Just trust me.
- Light clothes + layers: It can get hot during the day and breezy at night.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses: Absolute essentials.
- Portable charger: You’ll use your phone constantly for photos, maps, and park apps.
- Refillable water bottle: Hydration is key, especially in the parks!
- Poncho or small umbrella: Florida rain showers come out of nowhere.
I packed pretty light, which ended up being the best decision since I came back with way more souvenirs than planned (oops).
Where to stay in Orlando?
I stayed near International Drive, and it was super convenient. Lots of restaurants, shopping, and it’s a central spot between the major parks.
If you’re going full Disney, staying at one of the Disney Resort Hotels adds extra magic with perks like early park access and free transportation.
For Universal fans, staying at Universal Orlando Resorts is amazing too, especially for the early entry and free shuttles.
There are also tons of beautiful vacation rentals if you want a bit more space and that “home away from home” feeling.
Best things to do in Orlando for first time visitors
Okay, this is where it gets exciting. Let me take you through my favorite parts of the trip!
1. Walt Disney World
Yes, it’s as magical as everyone says. Maybe even more. I went full-on Disney mode and park-hopped between Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom.
- Magic Kingdom: Cinderella’s Castle gave me goosebumps. The fireworks at night? I may have teared up. Okay, I definitely did.
- EPCOT: Eating and drinking my way around the world showcase was a personal highlight.
- Hollywood Studios: Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is incredible, even if you’re not a huge Star Wars fan.
- Animal Kingdom: The Safari and Pandora . The World of Avatar were absolute musts!
Tip: Download the Disney app and book your Lightning Lanes early to skip the long waits!
2. Universal Orlando Resort
If you’re a Harry Potter fan, this is your moment. Walking through Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley felt so real. The butterbeer? Deliciously sweet and totally worth the hype.
Beyond the Wizarding World, Universal’s roller coasters are insane. VelociCoaster had me screaming (and laughing) the whole time. Plus, Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida have amazing rides and shows for all ages.
3. SeaWorld Orlando
I honestly didn’t expect to love SeaWorld as much as I did. The orca and dolphin shows were incredible, and the coasters? Way more thrilling than I expected. Mako is my new favorite roller coaster, it’s fast, smooth, and has amazing views!
4. ICON Park
I stumbled upon ICON Park one evening and it was such a fun surprise! The giant observation wheel gives you a gorgeous view of the city, especially at sunset. There are also great restaurants and bars if you’re looking for a more relaxed night out.
5. Kennedy Space Center
Okay, this is a bit of a drive from Orlando, but if you’re even slightly into space or history, you have to go. Seeing actual rockets and learning about the space program gave me chills. It’s inspiring and makes for an unforgettable day trip.
6. Explore Orlando’s Food Scene
This was one of the biggest surprises of my trip. Orlando has seriously good food beyond the parks.
- Disney Springs: Endless dining options (The Boathouse was my favorite!)
- ICON Park: Try Tin Roof for live music and fun eats
- Mills 50 District: Amazing Asian cuisine and local spots
- Winter Park: A charming neighborhood with brunch spots and cozy cafe
7. Take a Break at Lake Eola Park
When I needed a breather from all the theme park excitement, I headed to Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando. Swans, paddle boats, and a relaxing stroll around the lake.
8. Go Outlet Shopping Like a Pro
Okay, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t planning on shopping much, but the outlets in Orlando always pulled me in. I stopped by the Orlando International Premium Outlets, and let’s just say my suitcase came home a little heavier than expected. From designer deals to everyday brands, it’s the kind of place where you think you’re just browsing, but you end up walking out with bags (plural). Also, the Vineland Premium Outlets are worth checking out, especially for their luxury finds at great prices. Pro tip: wear comfy shoes and go early to beat the crowds!
9. Wander Around Winter Park
If you want a break from the high-energy parks, Winter Park is the most charming escape. I spent a slow, sunny afternoon strolling down Park Avenue, and it felt like a completely different side of Orlando. Cute cafes, boutique shops, shady trees, and brick-lined streets, it was picture-perfect. I even took a scenic boat tour through the lakes and canals, and it was such a peaceful way to see some of the prettiest neighborhoods. This spot is ideal if you want a relaxed, local vibe with great food and beautiful views.
10. Discover Harry P. Leu Gardens
In the middle of all the thrills and rides, I found this beautiful, hidden gem: Harry P. Leu Gardens. I absolutely loved it here. Walking through the lush gardens, under giant oak trees draped in Spanish moss, felt like hitting the pause button on my busy itinerary. It’s peaceful, colorful, and the perfect spot if you need a breather or want to enjoy a quiet afternoon surrounded by nature. I honestly didn’t expect to enjoy a botanical garden as much as I did, but it ended up being one of the most relaxing parts of my trip.
11. Take a Scenic Hot Air Balloon Ride
One of the most peaceful and breathtaking experiences I had in Orlando was floating high above the landscape in a hot air balloon at sunrise. I booked it kind of on a whim, and I’m so glad I did. Watching the sun slowly rise over the lakes and green fields, feeling the gentle sway of the balloon, and seeing Orlando from above was pure magic. It’s such a calming contrast to the park chaos, and honestly, it gave me such a sense of freedom and wonder.
12. Try Indoor Skydiving at iFLY Orlando
Okay, I wasn’t brave enough (yet) to jump out of a real plane, but indoor skydiving at iFLY Orlando was the perfect thrill! It’s such a fun, safe way to get that free-fall feeling without, you know, actually jumping from thousands of feet in the air. I was a little nervous at first, but once I was in the wind tunnel, I couldn’t stop laughing. If you’re looking for a fun, active experience, this is a great one to add to your list!
13. Visit Boxi Park in Lake Nona
This place is such a hidden gem! Boxi Park is an outdoor food hall built from colorful shipping containers, and it instantly became one of my favorite hangouts in Orlando. They’ve got live music, open-air seating, food trucks with every kind of bite you could want, and even a beach volleyball court. The atmosphere is super relaxed and local, and it was the perfect spot for an easygoing night out with good food and vibes.
14. Spend the Evening at Disney Springs
Even if you’re not staying at a Disney hotel or doing the parks every day, you have to visit Disney Springs at night. It’s way more than just shopping, it’s live music, lakeside dining, magical Disney touches, and just an overall feel-good atmosphere. I wandered from boutique to boutique, caught a live performance, and ended the night with a lakeside cocktail as the sun set. It felt festive but still chill, and I loved every second of it.
Where to eat in Orlando?
I’ll be honest, eating in Orlando became one of my favorite parts of the trip. Each day felt like a mini food adventure. On my first day, I ended up at Disney Springs and stumbled into The Polite Pig. If you love barbecue, this place will have you hooked from the first bite. Their brisket was smoky perfection, and the cocktails were just what I needed after a day of exploring.
The next morning, I treated myself to brunch at Se7en Bites, and oh my goodness, the biscuits are life-changing. They were so fluffy and buttery that I seriously considered going back the next day. For a quick, no-fuss lunch between parks, Hot Krust Panini Kitchen hit the spot with hearty sandwiches that kept me fueled for hours. One night, craving something fresh and a little fancy, I tried Kadence, a hidden sushi gem in the city, and I’m still dreaming about their nigiri. And of course, I couldn’t skip Voodoo Doughnut at Universal CityWalk, their over-the-top creations were just as fun as they were delicious.
Honestly, what made Orlando’s food scene so great was that every meal felt like part of the adventure. Whether it was grabbing Dole Whip in the parks or sitting down for a cozy brunch in Winter Park, the flavors were just as memorable as the experiences.
Any other tips for visiting Orlando?
- Stay hydrated: It’s hotter than you think, especially with all the walking.
- Use mobile apps: Disney, Universal, and even ICON Park have apps that make planning your day so much easier.
- Plan for downtime: Trust me, you’ll need a rest day in between park-hopping!
- Pack snacks: Park food is great but pricey. Having granola bars or trail mix saved me more than once.
- Embrace the magic: Whether it’s a character photo op or spontaneous fireworks, let yourself enjoy every little moment.
CONCLUSION- WHAT TO KNOW WHEN TRAVELING TO ORLANDO
Orlando swept me off my feet in the best way possible. I went expecting a few days of theme park fun, but I left feeling like I had discovered a whole new side of travel, one filled with laughter, adventure, and pure, unfiltered joy.
Every day in Orlando felt like a different story. One morning I was flying on a broomstick at Universal, and by the evening I was watching the sunset from the top of the Wheel at ICON Park. I devoured Mickey-shaped pretzels, screamed my way through roller coasters, and even had quiet moments wandering by the lake, soaking it all in.
If you’re thinking about visiting Orlando, my advice is simple: do it. Go all in. Say yes to the rides, to the parades, to the silly souvenirs. Let yourself be a kid again, even if it’s just for a few days. Trust me, there’s something about this place that brings out the purest kind of happiness.
And who knows? Like me, you might just find yourself already dreaming about your next trip back before you’ve even left the airport. Let me know if you need help with the planning or need more advice. Happy trip! 🙂
